Another incarnation of Doctor Who?

I’ve been (illegally) enjoying the fourth season of Doctor Who (although I’m annoyed I have to wait two weeks for the next episode because of Eurovision), so news that executive producer Russell T Davies is stepping down could be bad news. Except is isn’t, because he’s being replaced by Stevan Moffat. Whilst that name didn’t mean a lot to me, the ‘tubes reassure me that that is a good thing. Moffat was responsible for the two very best Doctor Who episodes ever: The girl in the fireplace and Blink (which won a Bafta award for best writer). He also wrote the next one that’s due to screen, Silence in the Library, which looks a little like Blink from the previews — I’m looking forward to it (stupid Eurovision!).

Some of Davies’ episodes have been good (Love & Monsters is a good example of a really good episode), but as a writer, he doesn’t hold a candle to Moffat at his best. Whether he can sustain this brilliance whilst managing the whole series remains to be seen, but we can hope. Whilst the episodes of the current series have been fine (and last week’s Agatha Christie episode was better than average), there hasn’t been any real stand-outs so far.

There is no indication from the article whether Davies will continue his involvement in Torchwhood, which had a generally pretty solid second season. It’d be nice to see a third series which maintained the same quality, so let’s hope he’s now bowing out altogether.

The big question is, if Davies stops writing Doctor Who episodes, will there be fewer gay Doctor Who characters? Only the Time Lords know!
