Fun product, has limitations.

It does a nice job mopping flat sealed surfaces, as long as you "scooba-proof" the room first. I did find that you can't let it roam around rooms as large as those you can let the Roomba go in, as Scooba does need to go over the same spot a few times to really get it clean, and also as the cycle is only 45 minutes. I also found that it can be much more temperamental than I expected, stopping mid-clean because it got stuck in a transition area (like between tile and wood), stuck on a flat rug it didn't detect, didn't like the amount of cleaner you put in, or needs the dirty water and filter's checked. I've also found it doesn't always obey the virtual walls. Unlike the Roomba, there is no mechanism for it to clean corners, so those you have to manually mop. It sucks up most of the water, leaving the floor in a damp-dry state - I read people saying the floor is dry, but that has never been the case with mine. Because you're stuck with only using the Clorox cleaner (which is pretty general-purpose), you have to manual go over those floor types you want to shine or polish (like hard wood) with something else. It is a lot quieter than I expected, and on those times when I had an issue not covered in the manual and had to contact their phone support, they were very responsive. All in all, if you understand that it is an in-between the full manual-cleaning maintenance product, and you like the Roomba quirks, Scooba is a good product.

Best thing since sliced bread

I've had my Scooba for about a month now and have been running it almost every day. I LOVE it. It gets my floors cleaner that I have ever been able to get them with a broom and mop. It was able to get up fine construction dust after our remodel that I could not clean up any other way. It cleans both my hardwood floors and my tile floors with grout. It scrubs the grout! No more scrubbing on my hands and knees! And it vaccuums up dust bunnies, pet hair, etc.--you don't have to sweep the floors before using it. In fact, I DON'T SWEEP MY FLOORS AT ALL ANYMORE! I don't have to--I just run my Scooba every day!

You have to use the Clorox solution that comes with it to run it; IT WILL NOT RUN WITHOUT IT. But you can use half the recommended amount and it will work, and the solution smells great. Buy lots of extra bottles of the solution, as you will need it. The reason Scooba can get your floors so clean is because it squirts out the cleaning solution mixed with water that you add, then scrubs the floor, then squeegees the floor and sucks the dirty water up into a separate storage tank for the dirty water. So you are not washing your floor with increasingly dirty water as you do using a broom an mop.

Just like the Roomba, the Scooba is round and it cannot clean all the way into corners, so you do have to do a little bit of clean up after it is done, but it washes 95% of your floor, and it is sparkling clean when it is done. I set it to clean before I go to work in the morning, and I come home to a clean floor every day. Heaven! Well worth the steep price. It is different from Roomba in that it does not sense that your floor is clean and stop. Instead, it goes until it runs out of washing solution, about 45 minutes. But running it regularly has given me floors so clean I could literally eat off of, something I have never had in 20 years of keeping house. And it does it while I'm gone! Is there such a thing as the perfect product?

Wow, I'm in love!

Opening the Scooba box, I could see that this robot was much more complex than the vacuuming robots (I own the Dirt Dog and Red Roomba).

Scooba is the same width and height as its brothers, Dirt Dog and Roomba, but it weighs a tiny bit more.

The Scooba is easy to open, the handle doubles as a latch to flip up the tanks and makes you feel like you're popping the hood of a car. The tanks separate from the Scooba so you can fill and empty them. One tank is labeled "clean", the other "dirty". You fill the "clean" tank with the Clorox solution and cold or warm water and when the Scooba is done cleaning, you will find all the gross dirty stuff that it mopped up in the "dirty" tank.

Scooba warns you to only use the Clorox solution it came with as other solutions might corrode the moving parts of Scooba. At first, I thought I would just use my own solution, but I'm going to stick with the Clorox solution from iRobot since it smells so nice (my fiancé always complains of the smell of Pine Sol or tile cleaner) and seems to really get the job done.

Each replaceable part has a yellow label with the part number ... these guys think of everything! The filter, brushes, and hose are easy to put in and take out.

When you turn on Scooba, it begins as all other iRobots do, it does circles and then goes off in a straight line, changing direction when it taps walls or cabinets. I specifically say "tap" because my other robots, Dirt Dog and Roomba, more so bump into walls ... I can usually hear them bumping into the closet doors and walls from another room if the house is silent.

I intentionally did not mop the tile for two weeks. We had two parties within this timeframe. The floor looked pretty disgusting, to say the least. There were black marks everywhere from people dragging who-knows-what in from outside. It looked like someone stepped on spilt soda and danced all over the tile. I let Scooba loose, crossing my fingers in hopes that it would remove these marks from the floor (I know from experience that I would have to scrub it if I were using a regular mop). Scooba got the small marks out in one pass; the more nasty ones took two passes, max. I was pretty impressed.

Scooba cleaned for about 45 minutes until its battery died. I limited it to only a small space, about 10x10, but it could have done probably about 15x15 in that amount of time. The floor looked awesome! It even cleaned the tile around the trash can, which has some really gross gunk stuck to it that I can't normally get out with a mop. I charged Scooba again, which didn't take long ... maybe an hour? And off it went again, to clean the rest of the tile. It crawls a little bit slower than the vacuuming robots, which is good though, since it's cleaning the floor not vacuuming.

I couldn't find any documentation on this, but I think that the Scooba spot cleans. I know that the Roomba Discovery spot cleans since my friend has one. It will detect extra-dirty spots and do circles around that area to really get the job done. Well, Scooba did this quite a bit ... I thought maybe it just did it randomly, but it did spot cleaned in the same spots a couple of times, especially where there was lots of gunk stuck to the tile - so, I don't think it's a coincidence.

Time to empty the dirty water ... ewww, the water came out completely black. It looked like I was changing the oil on my car. Just disgusting. I took the time to clean the filter too, all I had to do was run some water through it and all the dirt, hair and gunk washed right off. The vacuum hose and brush was just as easy too, just run some water through it and viola!

Scooba lets you know what it needs, just look at the little digital display near the power and clean button. It will tell you when you need to clean the tank or filter, if the battery is not snapped into place right, if the left/right wheel is malfunctioning, if the battery is too hot, all sorts of cool things.

If you have a big house like me (2000 square feet) with all tile, it might take you about 2 or 3 charges to clean the whole house (my entire house is tile, except the bedrooms, which there are 4 of). The battery doesn't last as long as the vacuuming robots, but you have to take into consideration how much more work the Scooba does. Scooba vacuums any dirt or dust, lays down the cleaning solution, brushes the floor and vacuums up the dirty water in a single pass.

Scooba left a little snail trail, it didn't completely dry the tile, but it was pretty close. The snail trail dried anyways within 2 minutes.

This is so much better than mopping because when I mop, it just makes the bucket of water filthy and then I'm just swashing dirty water around the floor. But the Scooba picks up the dirty water and really leaves the tile nice and clean. No more dirty feet or socks!!

The price may seem a little scary, but wow, am I glad I spent the money on the Scooba. My floors have never been this clean, ever! All of my friends were completely skeptical, but their jaws were on the floor when they saw what these little robots could do.

** UPDATE **
So, the Scooba just cleaned my entire house yesterday without needing to recharge! I charged the Scooba up for about a day and it cleaned every bit of tile in about an hour and a half or so. I only had to stop to clean the tank once. I am so pleased with this, I can't wait for my floors to get filthy again!

Started off happy, but breaks quickly and warranty not honored

Like most of the reviews I was originally very happy with Roomba, and give it a very positive 5 star review, but the robot broke after less than a year. I learned not only is it very cheaply built, but its bad design leaves it vulnerable to the dust it is supposed to be designed to pick up.

It turns out its parts are very vulnerable to dust which is a major issue for a vacuum cleaner. None of the gears, barings, or moving components are sealed so dust gets into them and they start to grind until they fail. Even the gears and bearings that drive the bushes are unsealed leaving them vulnerable to the dust and dirt they are designed to pick up.

Eventually the brushes on the bottom stopped working. The tech support person confirmed that it was still under warranty, and that the problem was a documented know fault with the design. They how ever refused to replace it. The only thing they would offer was to send me new parts that I would have to replace my self. I explained I am not a tech of any kind and did not feel I was qualified to replace small gears that need to be precisely installed. They said sending me the parts was all they would do for me.

roomba 560 is great

this is the best thing i have ever bought. it works great. all i have to do is mop after and i'm done. i have 2 dogs of which shed alot. and have never had a problem of this not picking it up. i have tile floors throuhgout my house and the only thing this has a problem with is extension cords. but i just pick them up before this starts cleaning. just can't say enough of how good this thing is.

I live in a small apartment, and I never have to vacuum it again thanks to my roomba.
If it breaks I would buy another the next day.

Lighthouse only works with models 535 and up!

This kit was offered as a free bonus with the iRobot Roomba 530 on Amazon. While this kit makes the 530 a much more attractive offer, THE LIGHTHOUSE IS NOT COMPATIBLE. I verified this with iRobot customer service after trying to get the lighthouse to work unsuccessfully. Lighthouses only work with models 535 and up. They are NOT compatible with models 510, 530 or 532. Amazon should do their homework.

The kit itself is decent. The silver faceplate is a nice-looking cosmetic upgrade. Also, be advised that if your Roomba is compatible with the lighthouse, you'll still need a pair of 'C' batteries to power the lighthouse.

Amazing deal!

This package was everything I wanted, including an exceptional value!
Just the price of the extra "lighthouse" alone on other sites was nearly the price of this whole package. If you have recently purchased a robo vacum this is absoulutely the next thing you want to buy for it. We love our roomba(also purchased from Amazon). With proper care and regular cleaning it will last many years!!! As for the poor reviews on what this package contains.Nothing is hidden the listing clearly shows what you are buying so if you don't need or want all the extra stuff why would you buy
this package in the first place? Those negative reviews are about something you did not want but chose to purcase anyway, not about the true value or quality of the products.

Roomba Accessory Box... Awesome Deal!

This particular bundle of accessories for the Roomba 500 series is an amazing deal! I really needed another lighthouse and the brushes were wearing out. The cover to my Roomba was also cracked and scratched from getting jammed under a certain part of our couch. This bundle took care of everything, was neatly packed and shipped quickly!

HSN model, not as Amazon advertises

If you're like me and did your research on the various iRobot Roomba models then when you saw this for sale here it probably confused you. The 536 was actually a "retailer exclusive" that was originally only sold on HSN. That package (look on their site for the specifics) is what you'll get here. I've just received this model from Amazon so while I can't talk about the long term function of the device I wanted to make sure potential buyers understood this is NOT a schedule-able Roomba as described.

- This package comes with one (1) "auto" Virtual Wall, NOT a Lighthouse.

- This package comes with a Roomba 536 which does NOT support scheduling. It's the same baseline functionality as a 532.

- This package does NOT come with both cleaning tools, only the circular brush cleaning cool.

- This package DOES come with extra filters and the AeroVac bin (highly recommended by my friends)

- This package is NOT in the original box, only the inner box - no list of "what's in the box" or anything, however the robot itself still appeared to be in the original plastic bag.

I have no idea where Amazon got their product features & description as nowhere can you find a line that the 536 supports scheduling. I contacted iRobot directly before ordering this to confirm the fact that this is the same basic robot as other 530's just with different accessories.

Frankly I'm a little surprised Amazon doesn't have a method to report incorrect information in their description as I'm sure some people might get pretty upset when they realize what they're ordering is not what is advertised. I called Amazon to let them know about this before I ordered and they were not interested in doing anything about it.

I'm giving this 4 stars because even if it is a leftover from HSN stock, it's a great price for a 530 series roomba with the AeroVac bin included on top.

roomba is the best pet ever. he doesn't shed and he even cleans up after himself. he can jump over carpet and glide on wood floors. he holds so much and when he's super full it takes just a click and dump to get rid of his waste. we've had him since february and we love him dearly

We have had two roombas in the 400 series and they worked well but after 5 years died. The new roomba is great and it compensates for tile or carpet automatically, Great little machine Thanks Amazon for the quick delivery jk

A mixed blessing, but still useful

I have the Roomba 4110 which looks just like this one, but is part of a special combo kit that bundles a few accessories such as aninvisible barrier unit, remote control, and the charging station which acts as an automatic home base.

Overall, this Roomba does its job fairly well, but has problems in certain situations. Will this replace your handy vacuum cleaner? Absolutely not. It does help with daily surface cleaning, which is good if you have pets that shed constantly for example. If you run the Roomba every few days or so, it will help make your regular vacuum chores easier (the bag will fill up less often, less rigorous cleaing will be required, and so on).

Below are some limitations I have discovered. Also, I have found some issues with the available accessories that you might want to consider as well.

The manufacturer isn't kidding when they suggest clearing your floors just as you would if you were to vacuum normally. See my comments below for some specific issues.

Keep in mind that this "intelligent robot" is really just a vacuum cleaner with wheels that wanders around blind until it bumps into something, which in turn causes it to turn and wander off in a new direction.

It picks up dirt, dust, and pet hair pretty well. It seems to be handy for places like under the bed which are difficult to vacuum with a normal vacuum cleaner. It also does a pretty good job of cleaning the edges of floors along walls and furniture. Over time it will cover the majority of the floor space in a given room. It is interesting to watch it wander around and do its job (and be ready to rescue it if it gets stuck).

The Roomba *will* wander all over your house if left unattended. You can buy the "electronic barrier" accessories to keep it in certain rooms, but I found it just as effective to simply shut doors or block doorways or halls with a laundry basket, child gate, or a similar barrier that you have handy around the house.

It seems to have problems with small carpets, throw rugs, or door mats that are thin and light. Ours likes to get caught up on the corners of those kind of rugs and get stuck until rescued. We have wall-to-wall carpeting in some rooms which doesn't seem to bother the Roomba. That kind of carpetting does seem to slow it down a tiny bit as it rolls across, but doesn't really bother it. I imagine "deep pile" or very thick carpeting would give it major problems though.

It can usually bump and turn its way around large tables and furniture, but if we leave small lamp tables or "TV tables" out, ours seems to get stuck between the legs and will bounce around in a circle until rescued.

Our Roomba kit came bundled with the automatic recharge unit that allows this Roomba to "find its way home" to recharge. I found this feature "cute" but not really all that useful. If I press the button sequence to command it to "go home," it could take upwards of half an hour wandering around the room trying to find the charger. It gets worse if there are any obstacles (such as a shoe or table legs) in the middle of the floor of the room with the home base chager. If the battery gets low while it is wandering around another room, there is a good chance that the battery will run out as it wanders around trying to find its way home. In my opinion, don't bother buying this accessory. Just set the Roomba on the manual charger when you are done running it.

Lastly, our bundle kit also came with a remote control unit that lets you drive the Roomba around manually. This works fairly well and is good if you want to help it navigate around some tricky furniture or corners. I have found one issue though. If you happen to use the remote in the same room as the home base charger I discuss above, our unit will randomly decide it is time to "go home," regardless of battery status or how I am trying to control it with the remote. The only way to prevent the Roomba from getting confused when I use the remote control is to unplug or cover up the home base charger so the Roomba can't "see" it. This is a pretty annoying "feature."

Update [1/20/2006]:

After about a year, the battery became weak and had to be replaced because it would not hold a charge. I have heard from others informally that the batteries last around a year before needing replacement. So in addition to my above comments, I would add that it looks like there is possibly a $50 a year "maintenance fee" in addition to the purchase price of a Roomba due to the potentially limited life expectancy of the rechargable battery.

Update [3/20/2006]

The main roller brush no longer turns due to to the gears jamming and the plastic brush assembly cracking. In the end, it looks like I got just over a year of useful service from this product.

What a Cool Little Gadget!

I needed an extra "quirky", fun gift for my wife for Xmas and saw this advertised on a shopping network. I had remembered how she was in awe of it at a neighbor's house, so I ordered one. Well, a week later, the thing has barely stopped! We use it everywhere; rugs, carpet, barefloors.... the thing cleans very well and is very thorough. It won't "deep clean" or replace your regular vacuum, but it is good for a general cleaning or spot cleaning. A regular vacuum, in my opinion, should be used every couple of weeks. Where this robot really shines is under beds and furniture. We brought it to my parent's house (where my mother keeps an impeccable house) after Christmas to give them a demo and let it rip in their three bedrooms. The machine turned itself off in two of the three rooms because the bin filled up with too much dust collected from under the beds! Of course, logically, the next time those rooms are done, the dust volume won't be as much and the machine will complete it's "mission". I can't say enough good things about it. The model I bought came with two virtual "walls", six extra filters and the hanger to store and charge it on the wall. I also sprang for the self docking charger. When the Roomba gets tired or is done cleaning, it will seek out the charger and "dock" itself and begin charging for the next session. It will not leave the charger on its own! It's worth the extra 50 bucks to see this thing line itself up for docking. Kinda like the space shuttle approaching the internatinal space station!

What to Expect

OK. First let me say that this product is amazing and well worth the money. As an engineer, this thing has amazing obstacle avoidance software, and it navigates rooms extremely well. I put a good deal of research into this vac before I bought it - so let me tell you what you can expect, and more importantly- what not to expect. The majority of reviews that are negative are from people with defective units or people who expected something completly unrealistic.

My wife and I have about a 1500 square foot house. To really get the most out of the unit, we divide our house into 3 areas, and we move the roomba each day into whatever area we want to clean (one large bedroom, the living room, and two smaller rooms joining a bathroom). We then run it in there 2-3 times that day and move it into the next area the following day. I was suprised at how well it will navigate between rooms if you leave the doors open. Anyway, the floors are very clean - much cleaner than they ever were with an upright. The roomba really does a great job on the baseboards and under furniture. The suction is NOT as strong as an upright, but the unit will cover most areas several times - and after several times, it will pick up as much or more than most uprights. It has to hit larger pieces of debris head on to be picked up. There are some cases where the roomba may hit a small spot only once or miss a spot completely after a full 1-2 hour cylcle. However, if you run it multiple times in a day in the same place - you will have very clean floors.

If you think you will buy this vacuum, set it in the middle of your house, punch a few buttons, walk away - and your floors will forever be clean - do not buy this vacuum. This vacuum does requre that you empty the bin at least once a day. It does requre that you find out what type of items it may get stuck on the first few times you run it. It does reqire that you make sure you don't have cords or tassels in its way. It does requre that you clean the brushes every few uses. The roomba cannot do anything a normal vacuum does not. It cannot clean over tassels, it cannot magically hop over 1/2" thick area rugs, it cannot run over wires and ignore them. If you are willing to do these few things, such as "roomba-proof" the room, and clean the brushes - it is MUCH EASIER than a traditional vacuum. It will keep your floors very clean, and you will be very happy.

Let me tell you a story about why the robot is still a robot... My wife and I were watching TV and the roomba was cleaning (it's not really louder than a dust buster). We have a puppy... Well... the puppy pooped on the tile entryway while we were watching. The roomba... ran over the puppy poop and drug it all over the carpeted floor next to the entryway while smearing the poop all over itself (brushes, small places, dust bin). Needless to say - it was not pretty - and we had caught it after about 5 minutes. One and a half hours, and 150 Q-tips later - the roomba was clean, the carpet was clean - and the puppy was outside. Lesson learned - watch what the Roomba may run into. It's not completely fool-proof. It did it's job... and if I had watched the puppy - things would have gone well.

This is a great product if you don't have unrealistic expectations. It's a great product if you don't get a dud. The jetsons are not here yet - but I can honestly say my carpet and hard floors are much cleaner than they have ever been, and the unit is very easy to use. It is well worth the money.

3 dogs and an RV

Simply put, it exceeds my expectations. I'm traveling in a 26ft class C Rv with 3 dogs and a husband, all of which shed copious amounts of fur. My partner was very critical of this vac before we got it, and to be honest, I bought it for our cabin, not the RV. However it arrived while we were on the road so I took a risk at an "told you so" and used it in the RV. To my delight, we are hair free for a month now without having to lift a finger (except cleaning the bin and brushes on a regular basis) and the skeptic even praises it and named it Hazel. For a techno-phobe, this is saying something. It does a good job avoiding problem areas like steps and squeaky toys. The dogs watch it from the sofa and have accepted it as a family member. I find we watch it a lot too. It's mesmerizing. We run it once a day, often as we walk the dogs, and return to a very clean floor. I disagree with those who say it is a toy. It is not a toy; it does a good job maintaining a floor on a daily basis. I wouldn't expect it to replace my regular vacuum but rather replace daily vacuuming. We use a shop vac once every two weeks for those hard to reach areas that dog fur always seems to find (door pockets, top of dressers, etc), and use Hazel for daily maintenance to keep our travel quarters shedding fur free.
Two things you need to be aware of about this device. It doesn't like rugs with tassels, or shoe laces, or anything else a normal vacuum doesn't like. Roomba doesn't always see these things as obstacles. It does a great job of getting un-stuck (it uses what I call the dung beetle approach by rearing up and turning around...fun to watch).
You also need to keep it clean. I clean mine every other day. Emptying the bin is one thing, but I use the included cleaning tool to keep the brushes hair free on a regular basis. Since we have so many dogs in a confined space, it can build up hair on the brushes quickly. At first I thought this was going to be a bother, but its something I enjoy doing. Its like grooming a friend (in a monkey at the zoo kind of way).

Independence from the floor stuff

I spend a lot of time away from my house and don't always have any time to clean when I am home. I also like to have a fairly clean house with minimal work when I do get home. I got this vacumn about 2 weeks ago. I wanted to give it a fair chance before I reviewed it. Setup was incredibly easy and only took about 5 minutes. Everything was already in the machine except for the battery. I had the vacumn charged and ready to go 2 hours after I got home. The first couple of runs it picked up more dirt than I expected. I had it run once a day every day for the first week. Since then I only use it 1-2 times a week. It does such a good job that there is no need to run it more often in my place. The main area I use it is the front room and kitchen areas. They are connected at one end and the machine has no problem cleaning both without getting lost. The scheduler function of the walls and the vacumn work as they are supposed to. One of the few drawbacks is the fact that it is quiet due to a fairly low power suction motor. This necessitates the repeats of areas that iRobot talks about. The machine is sturdy and hasn't marked up any of my furniture or floorboards. It is small enough to fit under the overhang of my floor level kitchen cabinets. It runs much slower on deep carpet and although it can clean that type of area it isn't recommended. Clean up is easy and only takes a couple of minutes. I recommend cleaning out the dust bin area with a damp cloth at least twice a month. The kit comes with extra brushes and filters so that you don't have to worry about that when you first buy the vacumn. The whole kit comes with the scheduler vacumn, 2 scheduler walls, the scheduler remote, the floor base station with portable charger, and brushes and filter in place plus the extras mentioned above. You need 4 AA batteries for the remote and 4 C cell batteries (2 each) for the virtual walls. Be sure to thoroughly read the owners manual before using the vacumn the first time to make sure you know what it is going to do. Check the website to find out what the sounds mean. I definitely recommend this kit and will be buying the Scooba (their mop version) as soon as it comes out also.

The roomba is worth it- but know what you're getting.

The majority of reviews that are negative are from people with defective units or people who expected something completly unrealistic. On a side note - all of the units have the same capabilities. So I would recommend that you buy a slightly cheaper unit to test it out. If you really like it, then buy the schduler seperately. The high-end vacuum is no different than the low end one. The only exception is the red - which doesn't have "max" clean mode. I personally recommend the sage unit that comes with the home base. It has everything you really need to fully test out the unit - the home base is particularly useful, but the black basic remote (not the white scheduler remote that comes with this unit) is not very useful.

Ok - So I wanted to edit my review. The roomba has honestly done such a good job - that we no longer run it two or three times a day in the same room. We run it once a day in the heaviest travelled areas (living room & kitchen), and on the weekends in the guest bedrooms. It really is fantastic. In fact, when we whipe off the counters or the table - we just whipe dust and crumbs onto the floors - because we know the roomba will pick it up pretty soon!

Long Time Roomba User Extremely Happy with New Version

I've been a Roomba user for almost two years, so I know the benefits of a little automated vacuum. However we had three primary complaints that iRobot has addressed in this new version:

1. Inconvenience of coming home to a dead battery
2. Difficult to clean
3. Noisy
4. Could not focus on dirtier areas; only cleaned randomly.

1. We have gotten into the habit of, as we are walking out the door, putting the Roomba to work. However, we always used to have the problem of coming home to Roomba with a dead battery (inevitably it would die in the worst spots, like under our bed just out of reach). Then we would have to plug him in to our charger (which we had to shell out sixty bucks for) and wait for two hours to use him again. That was complaint one for the old version.

iRobot has fixed the battery issue on the Discovery. The fast charger (which we had to pay for before) is now built in. Secondly, and what has proven to be my favorite new feature of the new Roomba, the little vacuum automatically finds his docking station when his battery is about dead. I do have two recommendations on this note, however. The docking station appears to work just like a virtual wall, Roomba doesn't know that it is there unless it crosses its path, so you make sure that it is in a wide open room where Roomba is sure to cross its path in its waning minutes of power. Secondly, now you have to be extra sure to Roomba-proof the room so that he doesn't get stuck. If he's stuck he won't be able to find his way back to the charger.

2. The new version has gotten much easier to clean, especially the main brush. All the pieces now pop in and out of place easier and there are no screws to remove any of the pieces that need cleaning. This has proven to be a huge benefit.

3. The Discovery is noticeably quieter than the older versions, especially on tile surfaces.

4. The new line of Roomba Floorvacs comes with sensors that can detect dirt. That was the first thing we tested when we got our Discovery. I had pieces of Styrofoam broken into small pieces and it detected it and automatically performed a spot clean on that area. Then I put him in the kitchen where I had accidentally dumped a bag of cereal on the floor and then managed to step on it...Roomba focused on that area and cleaned up every little crumb.

I love my Roomba. I 100% recommend that you get one. [...] I bought mine at a local store in the mall and had to return my Pro Elite version 4 times before I finally got one that wasn't buggy. Then, under the warrantee, after my fourth one went on the fritz I was able to upgrade to the Discovery for free. So far after 2 weeks, the Discovery has been bug-free.

Nevertheless, because of the many issues that I have had in the past, and as with any new and emerging technology, buy it where you can purchase an extended warrantee and easily return defective devices.

Notwithstanding, buy a Roomba. Even though my wife and I never have time to clean our floors have been spotless for the last two years.

The Roomba--Does it work or not? The answer is surprising.

This was a pretty hard purchase for me. The reasons were 1) It was a pretty expensive item and 2) The reviews for this product were very extreme--from high praise to the pits. (See previous review about the person who returned *four* of them. Hard to believe, actually.) But the promise of an automated robot that would do the daily vacuuming was too much to turn down and I decided to take a chance on the Roomba Discovery. The odds were in my favor as the store I purchased it from offered a 60-day money back guarantee. If it didn't work, no problem.

I unpacked the Roomba Discovery and found these items packed with it: the Roomba, battery pack, charger, two infra-red "wall" devices, a cleaning utility brush, a couple of extra air filters, a wall mount kit, the home charging base, a remote control and associated manuals, advertisements and offers.

The Roomba Discovery and all its contents were fimrly and snuggly packed inside their foam enclosures. After reading the manual, (yes, its a good idea to read the manual), I plugged the Roomba into its home base charger and took it for its first test run around the house the next day. An insert note says that the Roomba needs a 16 hour uninterupted charging cycle the first time around, so if you are in a hurry to clean your house, you'll have to wait at least a day before you can. The Roomba is easy to use and uncomplicated even for a non-techie to use. There are four control buttons on the top of the unit which allows you to turn it on, set it to "clean" mode, another to "max" mode, and one other button to "spot" mode. Each one of these commands tells the Roomba how to clean. Clean is the generic command that allows the robot to freely roam, while the max mode tells the device to clean till it runs out of power. The spot mode allows for the cleaning of a small area.

Alright, how does it do? My first test was to set the Roomba Discovery to "clean" mode. It promtly made a few musical notes to let me know it was ok, and started on its mission to clean my house. To be perfectly frank, I did not have very high expectations for the machine. But as the unit bumped and moved along, I was quite amazed at the cleaning power of the Roomba. It was able to pick up a ton of dog hair, debris, and dirt that would challenge most uprights. The onboard computer was able to get the Roomba out of small corners and various other traps around the house and proved to be a very intelligent little robot. The Roomba was able to work continuously for about an hour and a half before it started its run for the self charging station. The power button alerts you to the status of charge of the Roomba--green means full charge, yellow means less than half, and red means almost empty. The Roomba determines if it needs to dock with its station, depending on the state of charge it is in. As the unit started to go down in charge, it started towards the docking-charging station, and out of a scene from NASA, the Roomba homed in on the power station, docked succesfully and started to charge itself. Amazing.

The Roomba Discovery does a fantastic job of picking up dog hair, which was one of the primary reasons for us getting an automated vaccum robot. The daily chore of doing this was pretty time consuming and the Roomba scores an A+ for its ability to reach areas that an upright couldn't possiblty reach. We were all surprised and quite pleased with how the Roomba works. The reason why the Roomba Discovery didnt garner a perfect "5" (I'll give it a 4.5) was due to a few minor issues. First, while the Roomba does a great job of picking up dirt, debris and dog hair, the brushes on the Roomba need to be cleaned of all the wrapped animal hair and fibers occassionally. The second issue revolves around the battery life. While you can get up to 120 minutes on a flat hard surface, if you have lots of carpets,(like we do), the Roomba will run out of gas in about an hour and a half. The third issue is price point. The Roomba will cost you as much as some uprights, if not more. This issue may be one of the primary reasons why many, and until recently, myself, have held off on purchasing the unit.

The Roomba Discovery is easy to use, highly efficient in its vacuuming chores and will save you untold hours of time. If you save up for one and decide to make the leap, just make sure you buy it from a dealer which offers you a money back guarentee. As for the person who had to return four Roomba units, the cause is probably user error, more than anything else. Most probably, the person had thick shag carpets which got caught in the Roomba's brushes. As with any product, it pays to read the manual first.

Long-Time Roomba User Extremely Happy With New Generation

I've been a Roomba user for almost two years, so I know the benefits of a little automated vacuum. However we had three primary complaints that iRobot has addressed in this new version:

1. Inconvenience of coming home to a dead battery
2. Difficult to clean
3. Noisy
4. Could not focus on dirtier areas; only cleaned randomly.

1. We have gotten into the habit of, as we are walking out the door, putting the Roomba to work. However, we always used to have the problem of coming home to Roomba with a dead battery (inevitably it would die in the worst spots, like under our bed just out of reach). Then we would have to plug him in to our charger (which we had to shell out sixty bucks for) and wait for two hours to use him again. That was complaint one for the old version.

iRobot has fixed the battery issue on the Discovery. The fast charger (which we had to pay for before) is now built in. Secondly, and what has proven to be my favorite new feature of the new Roomba, the little vacuum automatically finds his docking station when his battery is about dead. I do have two recommendations on this note, however. The docking station appears to work just like a virtual wall, Roomba doesn't know that it is there unless it crosses its path, so you make sure that it is in a wide open room where Roomba is sure to cross its path in its waning minutes of power. Secondly, now you have to be extra sure to Roomba-proof the room so that he doesn't get stuck. If he's stuck he won't be able to find his way back to the charger.

2. The new version has gotten much easier to clean, especially the main brush. All the pieces now pop in and out of place easier and there are no screws to remove any of the pieces that need cleaning. This has proven to be a huge benefit.

3. The Discovery is noticeably quieter than the older versions, especially on tile surfaces.

4. The new line of Roomba Floorvacs comes with sensors that can detect dirt. That was the first thing we tested when we got our Discovery. I had pieces of Styrofoam broken into small pieces and it detected it and automatically performed a spot clean on that area. Then I put him in the kitchen where I had accidentally dumped a bag of cereal on the floor and then managed to step on it...Roomba focused on that area and cleaned up every little crumb.

I love my Roomba. I 100% recommend that you get one. However, as much as I love Amazon, I do not recommend you buy Roomba online, unless you do it right here where you can return it to local Sharper Images. I bought mine at a local Sharper Image store in the mall and had to return my Pro Elite version 4 times before I finally got one that wasn't buggy. Then, under the warrantee, after my fourth one went on the fritz I was able to upgrade to the Discovery for free. After 2 months, the Discovery has been bug-free thus far.

Nevertheless, because of the many issues that I have had in the past, and as with any new and emerging technology, buy it where you can purchase an extended warrantee and easily return defective devices...like Sharper Image.

Notwithstanding, buy a Roomba. Even though my wife and I never have time to clean our floors have been spotless for the last two years.

Help in Maintaining Roomba

Roomba awes me with the amount of dirt and hair found each and every day! I use it daily on an old home and discover years of dust we were breathing. The filter system really works well. My house is now vacuumed daily before I even get out of bed!

Maintenance was not something I counted on so was unprepared. My hair is longer and winds around the gear shafts causing a troublesome cleanup. However, I remembered a sewing seam ripper which easily cuts through the hairs and picks them out. The best thing is the small size and availability. It is cheap and available anywhere sewing supplies are sold. It is designed to get into small areas like the left gear grove on the beater roller....no more tangled hairs now.

I also drafted a brush to thoroughly clean the cage brush areas so the dirt doesn't get into the gears. A common shaving brush or vegetable brush (soft and round) works very well. Both items fit in a drawer for daily use.

To save on the filters and insure Roomba runs to the max, I carefully rinse the red plastic filter casing under running water, making sure no water gets into any other compartments. The actual filter is also rinsed and both are allowed to completely dry (no dampness please!). After about 2 weeks of horribly dirty rooms which cause filthy filters, I discovered I could spray the filters with a common household cleaner, rinse and re-use--Saved me a lot on filters.

I alternate the filters (2 came with my Roomba) which insures they are dry when reinserting.

I find the 5 minutes or less of maintenace each day extends the amount of actual time Roomba efficiently cleans. My old, old carpets and floors look new again. In fact, I can see the tack boards since no dust plumps up the carpet fibers! It saved me hiring a steam cleaner or getting new carpeting.

Roomba is call Matilda at our house. When she is tired and does not return to home base because a room needs an extensive cleaning, I push CLEAN on the remote and the onboard voice sends me an audible signal so I can find her and help her return home....just like the locator on a portable phone. (Great for under beds or in hidden areas). The next day she is up and cleaning my floors again while I snooze!

Amazing Product

You just can't believe how much dirt and hairs this little vacuuming robot can pick up ! It is smart and thorough. It can get stuck on some loose objects on the floor so before the robot starts, do pick up the loose electric cords or power cords from your cell phone chargers. And it does require frequent cleaning because of the relatively small capacity of the trash bin. I have been cleaning it after each weekly use. And it takes about 30 minutes to do a thorough maintenance job. Overall, I am very satisfied with its performance, and I think it is doing a better job than me, trying to cleaning the tile floor !

Excellent product. CAUTION!! THIS PRODUCT IS NOT FOR LAZY PEOPLE!

We love the Roomba. Bought the 570 Pet Series in 03/2011 because we have two dogs and were tired of vacuuming every day. We had just replaced all our carpet with hardwood and the dog hair REALLY shows up on the hard floor. CAUTION!! THIS PRODUCT IS NOT FOR LAZY PEOPLE! If you think you can buy this, turn it on and forget about it and have clean floors all the time you will be dissapointed. But there is a fine line between laziness and efficiency and I'm all about pushing that envelope. We let it run every day cleaning two-three rooms at a time, (about 500-600 square ft. it could probably do more) and we clean the robot after every run, that's right, EVERY run. This is important. If you do not clean this unit religiously it will fail. I've lived with long-haired women most of my life and in my experience it is the long human hair that kills vacuum cleaners. The hair wraps around moving parts, works its way into the bearings, heats up and destroys them. The beauty of the Roomba is that it is so designed that hair almost can't get into any bearings at all and it is super easy to clean. And if you clean it after each run, well, it's now late June and our Roomba, (I call him Davros) is going strong. Our floors are consistenly clean. I spend about 5-7 minutes cleaning the robot each run, a fraction of the time it takes to vacuum. There is a learning curve on that cleaning of course. I keep all the cleaning tools handy and use compressed air to blow out most of the parts. Once every week or two we move all the furniture Davros can't get under and use our stick vac on that. Oh, we use Roomba's Aerovac Bin exclusively. The regular vacuum bin leaves little piles of dog hair sometimes when it goes over a throw rug. I honestly don't know what they were thinking when they designed the regular vacuum bin, if that was all this unit had I would've sent it back! So if you have pets I recommend getting extra Aero filters and don't even bother with the regular vacuum bin. You will also have to learn what Roomba can and can't do. It does an amazingly good job of getting around and avoiding obstacles, but we have to move our ironing board and the baby's high chair, Roomba gets stuck on the horizontal tubes. It also got tangled in some computer wires. But there was no damage to the wires or Roomba. The thing is smart enough to shut off and yell for help when it gets stuck. All in all we love it.

Love my roomba

I waited for the 500 series, and I was not disappointed. It works right out of the box, and is simple to use and clean. Definitely worth the price. I like it for both my wood floors and my carpets! I've owned it now for more than 6 months, and it has not given me a problem.

I just sent my roomba 440 off on its first assignment, clean my 750 sq ft apt! I am surprised at well this little robot is cleaning the floor, its no deep clean mind you but its picking up a ton of stuff! I have already emptied the bin twice. On the down side the roomba has gotten stuck about 6 times now, so i would recommend that you watch it carefully the first time you use it, plus it will let you know with a chime when its stuck and gives up on freeing itself. The run time is about 1 hr, which is enough time for this roomba to go over my entire apartment twice, at the moment its headed back into my bedroom for the 4th time. Just died! Ran from 8:10am to 9:21am. I can't wait to give it another charge and set it free before i head out for work in the morning, after i fix its little favorite places to get stuck.

Pros:
-Obviously cleans so you don't have to.
-Highly entertaining!
-Picks up lots of stuff from the carpet/tile/vinyl
-**Cleans under places i haven't seen since i moved in.
-Cheap at $200 considering what this thing actually does.

Cons
-Doesn't self dock for recharging like other robots.
-Doesn't perform well in high traffic areas.
-NiCd battery may provide the power this thing needs but come on! its 2010, this thing should have lithium batteries. NiCd wears out fast, its heavy, they are a battery that has a great memory(BAD thing!, remember to always store roomba with no charge and never half charge the battery).

All in all im happy with its performance, but you should never expect miracles.

I was so happy with the performance of my Roomba i cleaned it and took it back to target where i was given a full refund (love target!). I went to frys electronics to get the newer nicer model (Roomba 560, $350) and was ecstatic to find that they had it on sale for $269, that made my night. On sale through 7/15/10. I only upgraded because the battery lasts longer (4 rooms), it docks itself for recharging, and of course scheduling. I was filled with geek pride when i was at work today, looked at the clock and realized that at that exact moment there was a robot at my apartment vacuuming the floors for me, i expected to come home and it would be stuck somewhere but, well, not exactly... it had gone into the bathroom and accidentally closed the door on itself, on the upside the floors in my bathroom are spotless.

It's a Very Love Hate Relationship

I got my Roomba for Christmas the year before last and once I got over my initial hurt feelings about getting a vacuum as my big suprise, I really loved it. It did an awesome job of keeping our floors clean and was able to get under pieces of furniture which were really hard work before. I have two dogs, a cat and two small children and it was able to handle that. I had just had my second child and so the roomba was such a help, when nothing else was getting done, the floors still always looked clean. I think it's a great appliance for anyone who has just had a baby. I also really appreciate it when we have guests over as I could be cooking or whatever else while the floors were getting vacuumed, it feels like an extra pair of hands. I do need to use our old vacuum to go around the edges of the carpet every month or so.

Unfortunately after 5 months it stopped working. I contacted customer service who were really slow and would email every couple of days to get me to try different ways of getting it to work. I would email them right back to let them know that hadn't worked and then wait a couple more days to get another suggestion. After a couple of weeks of that they sent me a new one. It worked for a couple of months then the battery failed. We replaced the battery and since then it's been very hit and miss. We've replaced the battery again but it goes through spells when it doesn't work, then inexplicably works again for a while. You get so used to not sweeping or vacuuming manually that when you have to do it it feels like a huge imposition!

While it's worked I have absolutely loved it and can't believe that everyone doesn't have one. I would honestly say it saves me about 3 or 4 hours a week. I just really wish it had worked better for longer. That said I am absolutely going to get a new one soon!

They Die Fast

I love the concept. They just aren't reliable enough for me. I went through 3 in 3 months. The first one had a bad battery. The second one started going in circles after 2 weeks. The third one stopped picking up dirt. The gears that turn the brushes stopped working. Never figured out why. I generally have a very clean home. So, it wasn't operator error. I still want one... but I want one that is going to last. I was happy with the cleaning it did. They are kind of noisy. They bang into everything in order to change direction (at least until they learn the floor plan). I loved the remote, the docking station that it parks itself in when it needs a charge. Irobot, I still have all the accessories. It's time you pony up and make them so they last!

very very disappointing

wow, what a load of rubbish. for the amount of money they charge this is absolutely not worth it.

followed all the instructions, fully charged the unit, filled the clean tank as required. cleared my bathroom floor (tiled). Powered on and clicked go.

it would not go. followed troubleshooting tips, tried again, still would not go. tried a third time and gave it a little nudge and presto it started! whooo hooo I thought.

a few minutes later, it stopped, same error as before. now i'm wiser, i gave a it a nudge and it resumed.

then 5 minutes later it stopped again, this time a different warning light - one about the wheels being stuck, followed the troubleshooting guide again, - could not clear the error, - none of the wheels were stuck. had to power down powering down meant the unit had to restart the whole cleaning cycle again.

five minutes later, got the same wheel stuck error. battery end up dying room did not get cleaned - the floor was wet though!

tried in the kitchen the next morning, and it seemed to be working much better. there was one spot where it would get jammed and unable to free itself. other than that it seemed to be working pretty good... thinking there maybe some light at the end of the tunnel, i plugged it into recharge it and planned to try it in the living room, however, after a few minutes of charging, a service error popped up with 4 beeps apparently that is a charger issue and you have to contact customer support for that one.

i think i may have purchased a 450 dollar lemon!

i hope you get a better experience than I did, there's no way this product is worth 450 bucks! what a load of tosh. sending it back without hesitation.

FYI, i own the Roomba 550 and love that little sucker! i was hoping the scooba would be just as good, but ended up very disappointed. I guess i'll have to mop by hand until someone invents a robot that works.

Very Nice!

I had an older version of the Scooba that worked pretty well. The new series is even better. It does a reasonable job at cleaning - not as good as by hand, but MUCH better than me not doing it at all and sitting on the couch. All in all, a nice (though pricey) device for something looking to automate a chore they'd prefer not to do themselves, or otherwise nice for people who need to clean often (e.g. kids, pets, etc.). Just make sure to use it fairly often (few times a month), otherwise the batteries start to lose their ability to hold a charge.

Good works and clean at least 90% clean

Used the iRobot, it's not bad....work well at least 90% clean...save time and energy for doing houseworks

Except the corners they could not enter to pick up the dusts due to iRobot size.

Overall, worth money to spend for...like it and love it!!!

Recommend iRobot 385 for those countries which use 240v as the adapter voltage input from 110 -240v....!!!

i heart roomba

I have wanted a Roomba for a while. I have a perfectly good vacuum (so I thought) but it was getting on in years and was cumbersome, plus I hate vacuuming and being a pet owner I really need to do it more than I would prefer (never). So when I found the basic Roomba very on sale I was suspicious and decided to research reviews first. In short, people seemed really excited about their Roombas. Its maybe the best reviewed product I have ever come across. These people seemed a little over-enthusiastic, but the few negative reviews seemed trivial so feeling confident I went and bought my Roomba (for $90). Now I am one of those crazy fans too. I am in love with my Roomba.
When I brought it home I ran my regular vacuum first. My house looked clean. Then I ran the Roomba and checked the dust compartment. I was both horrified and fascinated at how much junk was in there. Who knew I was living in such squalor and filth! It was weirdly satisfying to dump it all out. Every time I run it I am shocked at what it picks up. I haven't had the trouble with carpet tassels that others report - but it does try to eat my bath mats. On the occasion that it does get stuck, it is really quite good at getting itself unstuck and negotiating obstacles. Dump the dust compartment every time, clean it every handful of times - this will stay easy if you do it regularly. Don't clean it over the trash; it is so easy to disassemble (and reassemble) that the smaller pieces can fall out into your trash can which means you'll have to dig for them - obviously I learned this the hard way. I talk about my Roomba like it's a new puppy and am convinced that everyone needs to own one.

I think I'm in love!

I was skeptical about how well the Roomba would clean but I decided to give it a shot. I am so glad that I did! This was probably the smartest purchase that I have ever made. I also own a Dyson DC17 Animal which cleans like a beast. However my Roomba is so easy to use and cleans so well that I wish I would have saved my money on the Dyson and purchased the Roomba from the start. This model doesn't have all the bells and whistles that some of the more expensive units have but works perfectly for me. It is so simple to operate that a child could use it. Simply charge it and place it in the middle of the room and press the clean button. It starts by covering the large open area of the room by going in a spiral motion until it bumps up against something and then it will go around all the corners. It takes a while to clean a large room but it cleans like a champ. It has a decent sized collection bin so you don't have to empty it too often, maybe once every hour or so. This unit comes with a cleaning brush and three additional extra filters which add to the overall value. Everything will have to be picked up off the floor. Sometimes you will have to move electric wires because it will get caught up and stuck in them. However you don't have to worry about it too much because the unit will shut its self off if it gets stuck or if it sweeps something up that isn't normal. If you have family members in your household that have long hair then it will get wrapped around the brush just like a normal vacuum and you will have to remove it every once in a while. This would make a great gift for one of those people that has everything because I think pretty much anyone would appreciate a Roomba. The only thing that I wish it come with is the invisible walls so I think I am going to purchase some.

Love it!

So I'm definitely one that researches the CRAP out of my technological products - my roomba maybe a little to the extreme. After reading the reviews there was a trend that they don't last too long - so I decided to get the cheapest model and replace it every couple years instead of being out alot more money with the $500 models. So I trucked down to walmart and bought the cheapy model.

We've now had the little darling for 2 months. Background info: We run it in our living room and kitchen nearly everyday (hardwood floors, linoleum, area rugs). We have three border collies (LOTS of fur). Now my review:

It takes a while... about an hour and a half (if you've kept up on the cleaning... longer if you've left it a couple days). Does it do a perfect job? No. It does a pretty half ass job.... but if it does a half ass job every day - in two days it would be 100%... and well I don't vacuum like at all - so it does a better job then I do. I would not suggest this for someone that is home all day either. We're home school students - so it gets a little annoying, but if your okay turning your TV up loud - you can definitely still watch the price as right while it's running.

If I wasn't home all day I would really suggest getting the "home base". It's kind of a pain if you don't know where it stopped.

Cleaning the brushes is not really that bad. (remember 3 shedding dogs). The little tool helps alot, but an utility knife helps with the wound up hairs every once in a while. We also had it have it's first error today. Looked up online - couldn't find out what to do. Called irobot customer service. Was on hold no longer than 20 seconds after the prompts. Definitely a call centre with an indian lady - we had a couple language barriers but I've had worse with call centres. She let us know that hair gets wrapped around some of the barring that the manual doesn't tell you to clean every day... so manual - not very helpful - customer service a 8/10 (apple being a 10/10 so 8 is still really good!)

Overall - I recommend it for people that are away from home every day for a couple hours. People who are tech-junkies. People with pets (it does help!), people with mobility issues.
Not recommended for - technophobes (the weird pattern it makes isn't all that convincing) is easy to use though. People that are home all day. Perfectionist. People with rugs with tassles.

Excellent Product

I am delighted with my Roomba 540 for what I expected it to do-- it's actually a bit better than expected so far, though I have not yet owned it long enough to rate longevity/reliability. I have two small boys (7 and 5) and two cats (one long-haired) and I decided to use the Roomba upstairs rather than downstairs-- it is easier to control the clutter upstairs in our house, and therefore more practical for our use to use it up there on a routine basis.

Roomba vacuumed under a challenging queen bed, navigating over some cords, between two underbed boxes and six box-spring support pillars, and still getting out to the edge of the baseboard under the head of the bed-- great since I don't exactly move an oak bed around very often. Roomba covered the floorplan of a fairly complicated floor layout completely in the MBR, found the MBath, and cleaned up the tile floor very well, navigated back out (not using the included lighthouse yet) and discovered the hallway and one of the kids rooms as well as the kids' tile bathroom; it did a nice job on all. I did shut off the closet doors before starting Roomba. It navigated itself into and out of some pretty tight corners.

Roomba bumped into a balled up shirt on my son's floor and navigated around it rather than trying to eat it, though I don't recommend that approach routinely.

Roomba did have a couple of difficulties, which I found to be minor, compared to actually vacuuming:
*Now, I have not yet used the included lighthouse to mark off the rooms and help Roomba navigate-- but Roomba has not yet managed to navigate itself back to its base for recharging-- I have to go find it after it's done and take it home.
*On the first pass under that bed (which was in dire need of a good vacuuming) Roomba's brushes had a little more cat hair than it could handle and it spit out little hair balls here and there which I was able to pick up easily and discard-- maybe half a dozen tops. However on the second and third runs, when that floor was much cleaner, this did not happen.
*The directions suggest emptying Roomba's dustbin and cleaning its filter every three cleanings. OK, I've already indicted my dirty carptes here, but I've found it worth emptying/cleaning each use at least at first, but fortunately this is really simple to do-- push a button, pop out the easy to handle bin, dump in the trash, clean the filter (same as a dryer lint filter in your clothes dryer) pop bin back into Roomba with a click. No big deal, no mess, at least IMO.

On the up-side, when cleaning for the first time and encountering a lot of cat hair, Roomba's was stopped, and when I picked it up, a human sounding voice informed me that I needed to clean Roomba's brushes. This was easy to do and Roomba was back on its way. My unit came with spare brushes and a spare filter, suggesting these parts will need periodic replacement.

But if vacuuming takes only pushing a button to start and putting it back with a stop past the trash can when it's done later (or at your convenience) then I'm sold. And it seems to be doing a nice job with good coverage of the floor areas. I would give one to my mother.

It Sucks! (sorry, vacuum humor)

I did a lot of research on the Roomba 500 series here on Amazon, and was finally convinced this could be the solution to our huge pet fur problem. I ended up buying the Roomba 540 at Sam's club instead of here on Amazon, but since it is the same model, I thought I'd offer my review. I've been using it daily for about a month now and here are my observations:

Pros:
Seems to do a really good job vacuuming our living room (carpet) and kitchen (hardwood) in one shot.
It almost always finds it's charging station at the end, and even sings a little happy song when it does.
Has not once gotten tangled or hung up on anything
It's low enough that it fits under all our furniture, including couches, which is nice.
The little spinning side brush really pulls in debris from the corners
It slows down before it bumps into stuff. Like when it approached the flap on the couch, it slows down and then tries to gently push through. If it encounters a leg or something, it turns around.
It's fun to watch. Really, it's pretty cool. I was surprised when it went under the couch the first time and I couldn't hear it, then it popped out on the side.
Not too loud. Yeah it makes noise, but not keep you up at night kind of noise.
Pets seem OK with it. Our two dogs just get up and move when it comes near them. I was worried they would try to eat it, but so far, so good. Luckily there is not much sticking out they could actually get their mouths around.
Virtual wall works
Came with a sticker saying if I feel like getting my geek on and hacking the Roomba software, Go For It!! How cool! (more below)

Cons:
Brushes need to be cleaned after EVERY run (more on this below)
Bin capacity is pretty small. Only enough to hold one pass. They do make a larger bin you can buy though, but it sacrifices the dust filter functionality.
Dirt Detection is hit or miss. I would not pull this out for spot cleaning unless I was willing to wait for the entire room to be cleaned. They do make a remote control that can guide it though, so maybe that would fix this issue.
The 540 model cannot be scheduled to run at a certain time of day. You only get that with the 550 and up. You can buy an accessory for this though, so you're not entirely out of luck.
The 540 model comes with a "Virtual Wall", which is NOT the same as a "Virtual Lighthouse". The former keeps Roomba in one area for good. The latter keeps Roomba in one room, then lets it into the next room, then guides it back to its original room when it's all done and looking for its base. I believe higher models come with the lighthouse.

Thoughts:
On Cleaning: At least in our house, we have to empty the bin and use the brush cleaning tool after EVERY run, otherwise it will get about 10 minutes into the next run, stop, do the uh-oh sound, and tell you to clean the brushes. Then it just sits there until you do. Cleaning is not that hard, but you do need to take out the two brushes, take off the plastic spacers and bearing "cap", pick out little bits of fur around the bearings, run the brush through the cleaning tool (which is actually pretty awesome)and put it all back together again. It takes me about 10 minutes, and I really wish it could go a couple times between cleanings. So far I don't mind it but trust me, the novelty will soon wear off.

On effectiveness: It works. Way better than I (and more importantly my wife) expected. Our floors have never been so consistently fur-free.

On Fun: iRobot is the coolest company in the world. They actually encourage geeks like me to hack their software and give Roomba new functionality like playing music or drawing pictures. They provide a serial port on the Roomba itself for hooking it up to a laptop, and there's loads of software and info out there on the internets. Best of all, it will still clean your floor and it won't even void your warranty. Again, the folks at iRobot = awesome.

Final Thought: I'm still really glad I bought it. They do make a Roomba specifically for pet hair, which may alleviate my biggest con, I don't know, but even with the daily cleanings, I still like the Roomba a lot. It's just one of those things that make me feel it is so cool to be living in the future, and hey, clean floor.

Love it, Love it, Love it!
I read mixed reviews about the Roomba from several sites as well as love it/hate it stories from co-workers. Hence, I was skeptical about spending money on something that was either hated or loved by others. I took a leap of faith and bought it!
I've had it for 3 months now and use it about 3 X a week. I own 2 dogs, one of them sheds a lot! The roomba has been a blessing for me. Not only does it do the job of cleaning my tiled floors by itself, it actually does it better than I do.

My husband and I were amazed at how well it cleaned. I had my mother in law over for Thanksgiving and she was equally amazed at the job it did. I haven't tried it on carpet. It might be a different experience all together and I'm guessing this is were the problem comes for dissatisfied customers.

In regard to other reviews, I don't find any of the maintenance on this little vacuum an inconvenience. Yes, we have to empty the dirt from the storage compartment after each cleaning, but that's something I would do with any other vacuum cleaner. A big bonus for me is that it gives me time to do other stuff, without having to pay someone else to clean my house.

I would highly recommend it to my dearest friends, provided they don't expect the machine to empty the dirt in their garbage after cleaning.

I like the Roomba, but this is expensive

I have had Roomba's for years... They do require a little maintenance (Brush cleaning, cleaning the pet hair from the ends of the rollers) but overall they are pretty great. Cleaning the brushes is no big deal, I do it when I empty the bin. It takes a minute or two to empty the bin and clean the brushes, and it's ready to go.

We have two pugs, and they shed constantly. The 500 series Roomba's are a pretty huge improvement in design (I am a mechanical design engineer) They have redesigned the roomba to make everything modular, so if something does wear out, it is very easy to replace. My old Roomba was the first model with the scheduling ability, and I did have to replace a few things. I had to replace some transmission parts, and the batteries. Of course, I had to replace the brushes and filters many times over the years. I upgraded the batteries to give it more time to vaccuum, but the 550 seems to be pretty great right out of the box. It can run for almost two hours sometimes, depending on how big the space is I want it to vaccuum. It is also much easier to program than the old Roomba, it took just a couple of minutes and you program it right on the Roomba itself.

The Roomba 550 is also much quieter than the old Roomba was... MUCH QUIETER! It slows down before it bumps into things and the vaccuum itself is not bad. That was the biggest improvement I saw initially, with battery life and ease of replacing parts coming in right after that... (It's nice that the parts are easier to replace, time will tell how useful that is... Hopefully, it won't need much beyond brushes and filters. :-0 )

The virtual walls are also improved... They only take 2 C cell batteries, and the batteries seem to last longer. On my old Roomba, you had to schedule the virtual walls as well as the Roomba using the remote, and it was a little clunky. The new virtual walls don't require any programming. The only thing that has ever malfunctioned with the virtual walls is the dogs have apparently played with them and they occasionally are not pointing in the right direction... It is also not as obvious as they used to be regarding which side is the front... I have found the roomba cleaning the room I wanted it to stay out of because the Virtual wall was aimed at the doorjam instead of across the doorway; apparently it got kicked and whoever set it back got it backwards.

The Roomba 550 is $250 at Costco, and if the thing does ever break, you can return it to Costco for a replacement or your money back. (One of the little perks of membership, if you are not satisfied they will take it back fairly indefinitely...):-)
That is the primary focus of this review... Why would you pay over $315 with shipping plus tax at whatever your states rate is?

I think the Roomba is a pretty cool little device, and I recommend that people who want to keep their house vaccuumed all the time buy it... But I would recommend buying it at Costco.

As revolutionary as the dishwasher!

I have no carpet whatsoever in my house. For reasons I won't go into other than to say you can never get the nasty stuff completely clean no matter how many times you vacuum and shampoo, I hate it. I have four cats, one very messy African Grey parrot and two elementary aged children so, naturally, I could sweep or vacuum every room in the house three times a day. Being an extremely busy person and wanting to do everything except sweep, a robotic vacuum cleaner sounded like manna from heaven.

I have drooled over the Roomba for a long while and have researched it endlessly. A co-worker has one and just loves it. Because of the price, though, I thought it was out of my reach until one day a couple of weeks ago when I checked my email. There it was---the Roomba was a Gold Box Deal and it was more than half off!!! Oh, yeah! Picturing the Roomba slowly rotating on a pedestal bathed in bright light my fingers flew across the keyboard as I rushed to order mine before they ran out or the deal closed. I'll admit that afterwards I had a little buyer's guilt. I could buy a whole lot of brooms for $179. When it arrived (lickity-split and with free shipping thanks to my Amazon Prime membership) I looked at the box a while and contemplated sending it back. Then I thought that I'd give it a test drive just once since I'd gone to the huge trouble of ordering it. (Just kidding!) I took it and the charging station out of the box. After giving the manuals a cursory glance I plugged in the charging station in an out of the way but Roomba accessable area. Out of curiosity I tried to get the on board demo to start and ended up turning it on to vacuum by accident (apparently it comes at least partially charged). Off it went with me, the children, and the cats sitting on the couch watching in awe (OK, maybe the cats were looking more with suspicion).

The Roomba is unreal. You can see it working out where everything was in the room. It would bump into something and turn a little bit then go again bumping along until it figured out what was in front of it. As it went by something straight it would hug the edge and vacuum away. Table legs were not a problem either. The Roomba would bump them and then vacuum in a circle hugging all the way around the table leg. The final test was whether it would get stuck and force me to constantly come to its rescue which would defeat its purpose. So I watched in anticipation as it approached the birdcage. (Did I mention I have a really messy parrot?) I want to note here that the cage had a case of soft drinks sitting a little off to one side. First it bumped a leg then adjusted its position and under the cage it went. As with the table legs it would move around bumping and adjusting as it vacuumed. Then came the make or break challenge. It scooted out from under the cage through two cage legs that were just wide enough for the Roomba to get through and bumped into the case of soft drinks. I could see that there wasn't enough space for it to just turn and go the other way. Surely it was stuck. Not so! I watched while it turned and bumped several times until it got itself lined up just right and went right back through the same narrow cage legs and then continued about its way. Test passed with flying colors--it was a keeper. The docking function is totally cool as is the cheerful tone it gives when you need to empty the dirt cup. I hate to admit this but because it goes over the floor so many times it does a better job of getting all the dirt up than I do.

Now after a week of using the Roomba its become a member of the family. I'll sheepishly admit that I talk to it as it works. Once, when I walked into its path as it was vacuuming its little heart out, I stopped and said, "Excuse me." which is completely ridiculous. Just as ridiculous as me chasing it down to get the magazine it had sucked onto and was dragging across the floor and saying, "Give me that back!!"

Final analysis: The Roomba is an innovation comparable to the dishwasher and even the washing machine. I can easily see a future where everyone has one or more of them at work in their homes. It is yet another way to multitask in our busy lives. I couldn't recommend it more highly.

You know, the makers of the Roomba also have a robot to mop your floors. Hmmmm

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly Truth

First the good. It probably works better than your current vacumn cleaner. It really does vacumn well. We have a vacation rental home that is vacumned every two days. The Roomba made it even cleaner. Customer support is good, while the vacumn is under warrenty. Once its out of warrenty, it is out of warrenty. I would buy it with a credit card that doubles the warrenty. Will discuss further on the ugly section.

You do have to "set-up" your house for the vacumn. But it is no big deal. It will stick under some cabinets. Placing a piece of wood solves that problem. Fine cords need to be picked up, before the vacumn does it for you. Some furniture legs that are about 3/4 inch high will high center the machine and stop it dead in its tracks. It will vacumn about 800 sq. feet on a charge fairly well. We quit using the Guards after one or two uses and just shut doors or blocked off doorways.

The bad. This vacumn cleaner generation is equivalent to the Model T version of the automobile. You do have to be involved in the care and feeding of your Roomba. Maintenance is on-going and will probably include partial disassembly. It comes with a charger base that the Roomba returns to after each cleaning and recharges. The scheduler will also restart it automatically on the program you set. This seems like a neat feature, but to keep the Roomba running you need to clean it AFTER EVERY use. So the feature loses quite a bit of its attraction.

Do NOT throw away your old vacumn cleaner! To keep the Roomba running you really need to vacumn it after every use. So you need to vacumn the vacumn!!

Most problems with the Roomba and their finally death rattle is related to the gear box on the side of the brush compartment. It gets hair and dust in there and clogs up the gears. The Roomba gives you an audible warning to clean your brushes. If your brushes are clean this usually means your gear box is jammed. There are instructions on the internet on how to clean the gear box. The gear box could be improved by using metal bearings and better seals. This is really where the Model T analogy comes in. You take a screwdriver and take things apart and clean them. The good news is that under heavy use the gear box probably will need cleaning after six months or so. The first time it happened to us IROBOT repaced the unit. The second time after the warrenty expired we were on our own.

The ugly. They do not last forever. We ended up having a life of 18 months per vacumn even with daily maintenance. Granted we ran the vacumn every other day and we have DOGS . Long hair of any type is hard on the Roomba's. What convinced us to purchase were all the reviews of people that have dogs. It does keep your house much cleaner. So your basically looking at the cost of the unit for about 18 months until replacement. Expensive, and I bet you still have a 10 year plus vacumn laying around. Well, your Roomba will not live that long.

So why the five stars? It works as a vacumn and well. If you have a dog or cats it will keep your house much cleaner especially if you hate vacuming. For some reason cleaning the Roomba is much easier than dragging the vacumn all over the house vacuming. You save some time, but not as much as you thought you would. But the house is much cleaner!! Worth the money is our case. It might not be in your situation.

They came out with a new product geared towards pets. Not sure how effective that is, but if the gear box is not better sealed or tougher it would not make much difference.

What we would like is a Roomba that needs cleaning only once a week and lasts ten years. It might be a few years for that though.

It really works, but gets stuck along the way

I think my Roomba really helps me keep my 525-square-foot apartment clean in a variety of ways, and it actually does clean the carpet well. It's not perfect, but I almost feel like vacuuming is not a chore that I have to deal with anymore, which makes it worth the $100 I spent on it used. Would I buy it again? Under $200, yeah. Over $200 or have a bigger apartment? I'd wait for a better model.

The good:

It cleans my apartment. Whenever I use my Roomba, I find about two cups full of cat hair and litter that it's pulled out of the carpet and off the linoleum. Even if I vacuum twice in one day, it'll still get that out. Which is pretty good. I have nice clean lines in my carpet (even if they are zig zags instead of parallel lines), and the floor feels "crunchy" when I walk on it afterward, as though the carpet is not as compressed as it was before.

It's easy. You only have to press one button, but you'll probably end up sitting to watch it and positioning it exactly where you want it to clean. It's times like that when I think I'm actually spending more time than using a real vacuum, but that's because I want to micromanage my Roomba. Another easy point is cleaning the brushes. They're color- and shape-coded, so you will always know which brush goes where. And emptying the bin is as easy as pulling it out and dumping it into the trash.

It really gets in there. The Roomba goes where no vacuum cleaner has gone before. It spends just as much time underneath my sofa and bed as it does cleaning the carpet in the living room (which could be a bad thing if you care more about the living room or if the battery is running low.) I know that even if a lot of cat hair collects underneath the bed, it's still going to get clean.

It's fun to watch. I've had it for three months now, and watching it make it's way around the apartment is probably still more of an "event" than it should be. It's fun wondering which way it will go and if it will ever cover a certain spot.

It motivates me to pick up clutter. Because the Roomba gets caught on clutter (cat toys, cords, etc.), I end up keeping the floor free to be vacuumed. And I move other clutter like boxes and clothes out of the way too, because even though the Roomba won't necessarily get caught on it, I don't want any of my floor to go un-vacuumed. The result is an apartment whose floor is usually very clean and tidy. Also, with some light objects (like the cats' bowls), it'll push them into the corner and free up my floor space.

The bad:

It gets "stuck" a lot. I just had to get up from writing this because it tried to go underneath the entertainment center, even though it knows it's not going to be able to get out. About 60% of the time I use it, it either get stuck or gets something bad stuck in the brushes, which means I have to play doctor a lot pulling cat toys and random plastic litter out of its brushes. This is not a complete minus, though, because sometimes this litter is something that would have had to be cleaned up anyway at some point.

It's dirt detector seems off. There's a blue light that comes on whenever it's found a particularly dirty spot, and then it stays in that general area until it thinks it's clean. My dirt detector, however, is off because its light will go off after it's LEFT the dirty spot, and it'll clean the wrong spot over and over again.

Bad for curtains and cords. I have some curtains that touch the floor and a few cords running around my room, and the stress that Roomba causes has made me use the included virtual walls (come in handy) to block off this zone of my apartment. Otherwise, cords and my beautiful curtains are aggressively pulled on, and they end up stuck in the Roomba. It's a shame this zone of my apartment can never be vacuumed.

Battery life. I live in a 525-square-foot apartment (primarily just a living room and bedroom), and Roomba can BARELY cover the whole apartment before it's battery dies. The box says it covers three rooms with a single charge, and it does, but it cuts it close. I know that technically it hits each spot at least once, but it seems like it will hit one corner (under my bed) five times, hit everywhere else once, and then the battery dies. One reason I bought it was because my apartment is so small, but it turns out that the battery life is small too. Sometimes I just close off my bedroom so it can focus on the living room, since the living room is seen more.

Not great at navigating home. Every now and then when I come home, the Roomba has made it back to it's charging base. More often, however, I find it sitting in the bathroom or in the middle of the bedroom. Why? Because either it got stuck or because the battery died before it could find it's way home. If I put the Roomba three feet in front of the base (which defeats the purpose), I know that EVENTUALLY it'll find the base, but it really is only a handful of times that it has returned to the base from a regular vacuuming situation.

The ugly:

Cat hair. I have two cats, and even though they are short-haired, they still produce enough hair and kitty litter for the Roomba to pick up two cups of hair per battery life. The hair gets caught in the brushes, and it gets spun around so many times in the "hinges" of the brushes that it's almost spun into a thick yarn that's a little difficult to remove. I probably should have gotten one of the "pet models," even though I don't know how it's any different.

Does a good job, not perfect

We've been using one of these beasts for about a year now and I have few complaints. It's not perfect but it does a good job. It and a regular Roomba 420 clean our floors well and manage to keep a large kitchen, den, breakfast room area clean even with two kids and a dog running in and out of them all day.

To address some of the specific points in other reviews:

1) if it's leaving a large amount of water behind something is set up wrong. Try pulling the squeegee tight so that it is completely straight, or perhaps replacing the cleaning unit;

2) we use vinegar on our hardwood floors with no problem. We use the cleaning solution only on the marble floors;

3) if the battery is running out before cleaning is complete the battery needs to be replaced. Ours always empties the tank completely;

4) yes, the multi pin plug is a pain to connect, it takes at least 3 seconds to orient properly...

My only complaint, and the reason it does not get 5 stars, is that the thing is stupid compared to the regular Roomba. It gets stuck where a regular Roomba would not have problems. Better status indicators would also be a help, in particular, it would be nice to have the same charging / charged indicators so that you can tell when it is fully charged if you want to run it twice in one day (without buying another battery and the standalone charger).

Cleans well, but has some flaws

The Scooba cleans very well. I tried it right after the housekeeper finished mopping the floor, just for the fun of it,and the dirty water came out gray. Imagine if the floor hadn't been already mopped!

On the veranda,there was about half inch of dirt where the floor meets the wall. It's been there for 5 years, since I moved into my new house. I tried many times to manually scrub it, but it wouldn't go away. The first day I got scooba I let it run 2 cycles on the veranda.Guess what- the dirt is almost completely gone! A couple of more cycles and the tiles will look as they did the first day I moved in!

However, there are some flaws with this machine:
1. The clean water tank takes little water, and the Scooba stops in the middle of the cycle asking you to check its tank, so you need to add more clean water.To get an idea, it runs out of water after 30 minutes, the cycle lasts 40-45 min, and the battery lasts about 70 minutes.
2. The battery lasts enough to clean 1-2 small rooms, not 850 sq feet as advertised for this model.So, if you want to clean the whole house without having to wait for 4 hours for the battery to recharge, make sure you buy a couple of extra batteries.
3. Scooba spreads too much water and then does not dry the floor properly. Of course I don't expect the floor to be completely dry, but it looks as if someone threw a bucket of water on the floor, spread it around, and left it there.
4. Due to (3), water marks are left on the floor after the water dries. Don't expect to get the shiny floor look you get when mopping. It's a shame having a clean floor which has water marks and doesn't look shiny.

Overall its a handy product for people like me who hate mopping. It does a great job cleaning even old and hard stains due to its scrubbing function. However, I-robot should work on limiting the water injection, improving the drying function, and improving the battery performance. I would recommend Scooba, although I doubt that I would buy another one if this one broke down.

OK, let me address some common complaints

So far I'm very satisfied with mine. I have "whole house" ceramic tile and there's no way I was going to mop every day. This is much easier than mopping.

Let me address some common complaints I've read about the Scooba (any model):

1. "It makes noise." Yes, it does. Most floor cleaning machines (vacuums, floor scrubbers, buffers, etc) do.

2. "It leaves water streaks on the floor." Yes, but nowhere near as much as a mop does, and it dries much quicker than if you had used a mop.

3. "It doesn't do the corners". No, because it's round; you'll need to take a swiffer to the corners afterward.

4. "It gets stuck." It can; it's best to do one "zone" at a time, and move small pieces of furniture, such as dining room chairs, out of that zone before you set the scooba. You would probably do that anyway if you were mopping, right?

5. "It's gross to clean." Yes, it is; your floor was very dirty.

6. "It keeps going no matter what the size of the room." If it's a bathroom, then it could probably use the extra cleaning anyway. Otherwise, move it to another small room and let it run its course.

As for the unit not lasting, here are a couple of tips that may prolong it's life:

Keep the battery plugged in to the charger. If you leave batteries sit for long periods of time, they lose their power.

Use distilled water. Tap water can have minerals in it that over time can cause buildup, depending on where you live and how hard the water is.

Sweep the floor before you use it. That way, big particles won't get stuck in there.

CLEAN AFTER EACH USE. This is important because many problems are a result of stuff getting clogged in the tiny orifices.

If it won't squirt water, use a turkey baster and spray water and air into the tiny valves on the base. There's one on top and two at each end on the bottom by the brush.

If it won't pick up dirty water, First make sure the squeegies are clean. Dirt and pet hair gunk it up and it won't pick up the water. If that doesn't work, clean out the dirty water tank with hot water and white vinegar. Fill it halfway, shake it vigorously, empty, repeat if necessary.

If you keep getting a "check tank" make sure the battery is seated correctly. If not, it will keep saying "check tank." Make sure the tank isn't too full, also.

I hope this is a helpful review. I love mine, it does a fine job cleaning so I don't have to.

OK, not great vacuum

I've used the Roomba 610 and 560. I now have two refurbished 560s in our house, at the same price as one 610. And it's definitely a better value.

Before I talk about the 610, let me share what's good and bad about Roombas in general, based on my experience with both the 560s and 610:
Pros:
- You don't have to vacuum, the Roomba does it for you
- Scheduled cleanings so you don't even have to worry about it or be home to hear the noise
- Floors stay clean without much effort
- One button start it and forget about it

Cons:
- Absolute pain in the butt to clean these things. There's the two brushes, the front wheel, the spinning brush (which requires a screwdriver to remove), and the dust bin. All of these must be disassembled, cleaned, and reassembled, at least once per cleaning session.
- It's not effort free. As I said above, lots to clean, which requires 5-10 minutes each time you want to run the Roomba.
- With pets, the fur gets wrapped around EVERYTHING. Maybe without pets our cleaning of the Roomba would be easier, but the whole point of these devices is ease, and they do not deliver.

So the nice things about the 610 are:
- Easier brush cleaning than the 560. Not much easier, but easier. Hair & fur still get wrapped around the edges of the brushes and into the mechanisms, but it's 5% easier to clean on the 610.
- The accessories case and accessories. The brush cleaning tool is nice, but it doesn't clean the brush holders, where all the stuff actually gets wrapped up and is difficult to clean.

Not so good things about the 610:
- No carrying handle. This seems inconsequential, but after having a way to pick up my 560 without having to pick the whole thing up from the bottom, where all the dust and dirt accumulates, you appreciate a carrying handle. Why didn't they include this on the 610?
- Only two lighthouses. They say it can clean four rooms, but they only include two lighthouses. My experience has been that three rooms is pushing it, so unless you have small rooms two lighthouses may be OK.

So why did I get two 560s if I have so many problems? I hate to vacuum, and I'd rather clean all the brushes and edges once a day than push the vacuum around for 45 minutes. So it's a trade-off.

Read other forums and you'll see that the 610 is not recommended, it's basically a 560 with lipstick.

Great for light upkeep, excellent customer service

We have five pets. Three elderly long haired cats and two large short haired dogs. We recently upgraded to a new home with a cream colored carpet and a mix of tile and linoleum in an open floor plan. What was I thinking? I was thinking I had three days to pick a house for a relocation is what I was thinking! But I digress. The carpet isn't perfect, it's five years old and the previous owners were pet owners too, but I was determined to keep it in good shape.

I held out for the professional model despite the difference in price. I figured we had a professional level of hair here. Between one cat whose fur has the texture of cotton candy, another cat whose main hobby is tearing paper apart bit by bit, and the dogs with their rolling around on the floor I needed something that could stand up to the mess. I assumed I would need the larger debris bin to hold all the stuff that comes out of the carpet but actually after a few runs I felt that the smaller one with an air filter does a better job. It's not a HEPA filter but it gets a lot of dirt and dust into the bin.

I've realized a lot of things about the roomba in the six months we've had it:

+ I consider it more of a good automated carpet sweeper / groomer than an actual vacuum. It will not replace the old vacuum cleaner. But I've noticed that I don't have to drag the vacuum cleaner out as often. Being round the roomba doesn't do that great a job on corners but it gets pretty close so I need to use the edging tools sometimes.

+ I have to pick up all the pillows, papers, or any pile on the floor before going to bed if I want it to run well. Strangely this has become a *bonus*. It keeps me tidying. The nights that I don't pick up and wake up to find the roomba stuck on some pillow or the dog bed make me sad.

+ We have the timer set to turn on at two am but I find that with our home's layout pressing the 'max' button therefore making it run right away works best. 'Max' will just keep the roomba running through the large open rooms until the battery runs out of charge and dock itself or simply 'pass out' where it is. It gets the floors super-clean.

+ It does fairly well with larger cords and we don't have rugs with tassels so I don't know about that. Apparently irobot has worked on improving that system where the roomba detects a cord obstruction so it automatically reverses the brush. Smaller cords not so much - the sweeper brush got entirely tangled on a set of earphone cords but they did survive and the roomba kept on going! It runs under our sofa and coffee tables. It has a relationship with our large round ottoman that makes me kind of uncomfortable - it looooves to clean around that ottoman. Sometimes the roomba gets caught in odd places but we do our best to make sure it's unobstructed.

+ Those brushes need cleaning. Like all the time. I do it every night. Dump the bin, clean the brushes. Not just the brushy parts either but the spinning joints. There are two handy tools included in this kit and I use them along with a pair of old scissors. It's not pretty but it takes maybe two minutes. With the extra brushes you can swap them out every other night and that saves some time. To me cleaning the brushes and dumping the bin is a very small price to pay to wake up to carpet that was cleaned in the night.

+ Sometimes I check the front rolling wheel but the kind of hair in my house doesn't seem to get caught in there the way I've read it happens to others. I also change the filters in the debris bin fairly often and rinse them (not the bin itself though that's not supposed to happen). According to the faq on irobot's site rinsing the air filter is ok, as long as you make sure it's dry before putting it back in. Every few months I take the plate off the bottom and use some canned air to clean the dust and hair inside too. This is probably more maintenance than the average household needs to do but we have a lot of pets here and this was kind of a big ticket item for us. And I really really hate vacuuming.

So basically I love my little robot and don't have to vacuum but I do have to tidy up for it and clean brushes. I'm happy.

But! I have a great customer service story to tell you too!

The dogs are messy when they drink water and the roomba tends to get stuck on the wet outdoor carpet where their bowls are (I have to find a solution for that). I usually put the roomba back in the morning but one morning two weeks ago my husband didn't put it back, the dogs drank from the bowl and the roomba got wet on top!!! It's been messed up ever since. I haven't been able to get it to work. Took it apart, tried to dry it, tried to reset it. Everything. I was distraught.

I bought a 150 dollar roomba to tide myself over until I could get the 610 fixed (I had wanted another one for our bedroom anyway) and after taking one look at how flimsy it was I put it right back in the box and returned it to Target. There was no way it was going to hold up to our household.

So I called customer service Wednesday and they're sending a replacement. A new battery, a new bin and everything! I was told I have to ship mine back with an rma number and if I send them a tracking number then they'll ship mine. I just got a tracking number today!! My new one will be here Tuesday! Now I'm planning on putting a shower cap on top of my roomba so this will never happen again.

All in all if you're considering buying a roomba, hold out for this one or a 500 series. It's not perfect but the comparative maintenance chores, for me, far outweigh having to vacuum!

This thing is great!

I got the professional series because I have a family of professional grade mess makers (kids, husband, pets, etc.). I love it! I think when people are dissatisfied with it they do not understand what it is and what it is not. It won't clean up an already neglected floor. You start with clean floors and then push a button everyday and let it run around your house doing upkeep and you won't have to vacuum anything except for behind items it can't get to once a month or so. Before my roomba I vacuumed 2 times a week and still dirt would show up on the bottom of peoples white socks. Since roomba no more dirt!!! It handles the cat fur and it even found an earring I lost over a year ago that must of been hiding someplace. The best part is it can get under things my vacuum never could reach. Yes, you have to know its limitations. It is a programmed device. You have to change something's around your home to work with it. Get wires off the floor so it won't get stuck, for instance. But this thing makes the floors shine and the rugs a joy to walk on. In fact I am purchasing another one for upstairs this week.

Does not work on tile floors

Tile floors becomes slippery when wet, so the robot just spins its wheels.

Another problem is that its bumper does not react to obstacles too well, so in addition to half the time stuck in the middle of the room (because of traction problems), it spends another half of the time against the wall. Maybe 10% of the time is spent actually cleaning. That puts a lot of load on tires, so I expect this to get worse over time. Wheel-spinning also confuses its cleaning algorithm, because the robot "thinks" it is moving in a straight line all this time.

I did not return this robot right away. I tried using it in different conditions: I thought of maybe keeping it, but a couple of months later it was clear that I can't use it like this, so I contacted iRobot Customer Service.

Now iRobot Customer Service...

After learning that this has been happening since day one, iRobot asked me to "clean" the robot, and see if that fixes it. (How?) After a couple of more e-mails they told me to contact iRobot Sales department to return it, which I did. Sales said I am "outside of 30-day return window" so they won't take it back.

If my robot is defective and they can't fix it I deserve a refund. If it is not defective, then this is a design flaw. Then why are these sold at all, and advertised as bathroom cleaning robots? (Bathrooms have mostly tile floors.) And why can't I get my money back?

To get iRobot a better shot at diagnosing the problem, I even made a video for them. But they don't let you upload videos because the file is "too big" for their servers. OK then, I used my own FTP server, but then they said that they couldn't play it. I guess I will post it here then so that everyone could see.

I own 2 Roombas, a "big" Scooba, and a Neato. This "small" Scooba 230 is the only one from my robo-cleaner fleet that disappoints me in any way, and it is a big disappointment.

Bottom line for the robot: useless, or nearly useless.
Bottom line for iRobot Customer Service: no more helpful in servicing customers than their robot in cleaning floors.

not as impressive as iRobot's roomba but still usefull

I use the scooba 230 in combination with a roomba 555 (which is more or less the European version of the American 560 model). The roomba is scheduled to wipe the floors of my complete flat three times a week. Unless the roomba I don't use the scooba to mop my whole place at once. Generally I use it to mop the most trafficked parts. I let it mop the bathroom (small tiles) and the place behind the kitchen counter (PVC), each in the short mopping cycle, and the hallway (large tiles) in the full mopping cycle every week. And I guess that's what it is designed to do. If you think you can use it like a roomba or the bigger scooba models to take care of your complete house in one run, you'll be probably disappointed.
Some say the scooba 230 leaves streaks behind, this problem is solved by using only half of the recommended amount of cleaning solution. It carries only about half the amount of water than the big scoobas, so why should it need the same amount of cleaning solution? By using less of it you not only solve the problem of the streaks, you also save money since you don't have to buy a new bottle every so often.
The scooba 230 sometimes takes it's time to get moving again after it bumps into an obstacle. I think that's because it does not have the little third wheel the roombas have. I think this wheel is used to meassure velocity (that's why it's black and white: to count revolutions by means of an optical sensor). Without this information the little scooba cannot realise as easily as the roomba that it has actually stalled. But every time I observed this problem I did not intervene at once and just waited to see what happens next. And actually every time this problem occurred, after a couple of seconds the scooba did change it's direction all on it's own. So basically this is not really a problem, the scoobas moving pattern just does not look as aesthetically as it looks on my roomba.
Since you have to fill in water and cleaning solution before each run and since you have to rinse the fresh water and the slop bladders and clean the bottom plate after each run, it basically takes up almost as much of your time as if you where mopping these relatively small parts of your home by yourself.
So does it make sense to purchase a scooba 230?
In theory: No!
In real life: Yes!
Why? Because when you're going to work from Monday to Saturday you're not too enthusiastic about mopping floors on Sundays. But nursing a robot instead is somewhat fun to do. That's why in my case the most trafficked parts of my home are now actually mopped once a week. Before I bought this little guy the Sunday mopping was canceled quite often. So after all the scooba 230 actually does improve the tidiness of my home.

Disappointment

I have a roomba 580 and I love it. That's why I lately bought this scooba 230. First of all it' s like a simplified version of the irobot bots family: it has smaller size, it has a very poor alert system where you really can't tell what's wrong with it, no dock, etc. It just beeps and stalls a lot. I use it on a small terrace where I have some seats and it bumps againts a seat and stops. It also stops if it gets into too much water... water that comes from its inside! I't also stops suddenly and you can't tell if its beacause of low battery until you plug it. I said it in another forum; this product should only cost something like 100 dollars.
I hope all irobots in the future come with a wifi connection to update them, because this 230 scooba needs an urgent firmware revision.

Good product but proper care required!

I received my Pet Roomba before Christmas and have been using it since. My house is a real test with 3 very long haired dogs inside most of the day. I run the Roomba every day to keep the hair down to a minimum and we've noticed the floors are much cleaner (even though I used to vacuum alot). However, if you buy this you should know that it requires frequent cleaning of the brushes, particularly the axle area where hair gets easily wrapped (pull off the end cap over the axle). By frequent I mean once or twice during the cleaning cycle. Otherwise, the brushes just stop moving leaving you with a cute robot that just drives around chasing the dogs! So this means you really should only run it when you are at home to keep it clean. I also have already cleaned the front wheel (just pops off - was really full of hair) and the side brush (unscrew the screw). Bottom line, the unit works great so long as it is kept really clean. I've got the cleaning down to a minute so it isn't too big of a deal. But if you think you are just going to run the Roomba and empty the dirt bin once in awhile, you should probably not buy it.

Updated review - Still loving my Roomba!!

I received my Robot on December 15,2008, an early Christmas Present. Rather than wrapping it, I gave it to the Missus so we could use it so the house would be nice and clean for Christmas day entertaining.

It cleaned beautifully, the carpets looked great! This thing would fill up with crud even after running the old vacuum. How wonderful, one less chore to do.

Until Christmas Day! So much for showing off the new gizmo! The brushes stopped turning that morning, and repeatedly gave a "clean Brushes" error message. After many attempts, and hours on the IRobot tech site, we established that the rollers indeed were not turning.

After the Holiday rush, I found time to do a little more research. After consulting several robot discussion forums, it appears the cleaning head modules have a high failure rate. Apparently IRobot has made a new design of the module about 2 months ago. After getting frustrated with email support, I called IRobot and they say they will ship me a new module within 10 days.

Okay, considering the above mentioned ordeal, 2 stars is being very generous, but I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt. However, IRobot and Amazon should not ship items known to be defective.

So, I'll wait 10 days for the new brush module. I should have returned the whole unit to Amazon, but figured I would get the same faulty design.
I'll update this review Once I receive the new part and let you know if it fixes the problem, and hopefully give it the 5 star review I want to give!

UPDATE - I got the new module after about 10 days! It was fairly easy to install if you are handy at all, just a few screws and your done. The new module came ready to install, with a new brush style and new rubber beater thingy. I now love my robot! We have an australian shepherd who sheds constantly, and now a one year old boy who is all over the place. I can now play in the floor with him and he/I'm not covered in white dog hair! It's amazing that this little robot cleans so much better than my regular vacuum. Maybe it's a time thing. I mean, I would never vacuum a room for an hour, which is about the run time on a charge for this thing. We start it when we leave for work, and most days it's sitting right on it's charger like a good little robot should. Occassionally it gets stuck somewhere, or gets full and shuts down before making it back home to the dock, but most times it does exactly what it claims to do. Longevity is still a concern, but I no doubt will buy another if/when this one dies. Hopefully it'll last, I'm trying to be preemptive, by opening it up and blowing it out with some canned air, keeping the brushes and filters clean, just ordered some filters, they seem to really clog at our house.
But so far, IRobot rocks! I'll never vacuum again! (Now, where's the IMower?!)

NEW UPDATE - 3/15/11 - STILL LOVING MY ROOMBA! This thing just works. I haven't vacuumed a floor in almost 3 years! The Roomba just cruises along. We have the ever-shedding dog, and now a three year to clean up after. And for those who say it doesn't clean, I sure dump a lot of crap/dust/hair and who knows what out of the dust box everyday!

Robots really do work

The iRobot Roomba vacuum cleaner is my Christmas present. I wanted it as I've always been fascinated with robots. We've owned several Roombas including the very first one. The first Roomba was an admirable effort but it didn't clean much. It was fun to watch run around the floor though.

The second Roomba was the Discovery model. This one worked a bit better but had a ways to go before successfully cleaning my house.

Finally, we received Gort. Gort is the iRoomba 532 model specifically designed to help clean homes with pets. We have three cats so this seemed like the perfect vac robot for us.

It was. The vacuum really does clean. Gort happily cleaned my low pile carpet. He then moved onto happily cleaning my laminate flooring. While cleaning Gort managed to not eat up the curtains (a problem with the previous models) and he managed to not chew up the power cords (another problem with previous older models).

It looks like Gort is going to perform as advertised. Sadly, Gort is going back in his box and getting wrapped for Christmas Day.

But you can bet Gort will be happily sweeping my house after Christmas has arrived.

I can't wait for Gort to join his brother Robby the Discovery robot. The two iRoombas will help keep my house clean.

Jan 4: Gort far outshines the others. He thoroughly cleans my laminate flooring. He thoroughly cleans my carpeting. He does not eat up the throw rugs or power cords. iRobot really came through with development on this model.

As with all technology there are usually improvements as research and development lead to better products. A good example was the purchase of our first TI computer. We thought it was really something until we bought our Apple IIe with a whole 128k RAM on board. Today, I look back and wonder about the prehistoric computers I worked on and how we thought they were wonderful. The iRoomba robots can be viewed in the same way. Technology is fluid and will eventually lead to greater improvements much like the iRobot Roomba 532 which is a thing of beauty when it comes to performance.

What Fun!

In a newly remodeled house with laminate wood floors, I see a lot of dust everyday; Roomba 770 has been a good fit. What I've noticed after three weeks of daily use - the pros:
- Roomba does a great job in empty rooms; the entire downstairs comes out dust free.
- Works well under beds, chairs, wide tables, and kitchen cabinet toekick.
- Has great sensors for walls, boxes, pillows, and goes beautifully over heavy rugs back onto hardwood.
- Roomba didn't like the fringe on my oriental carpets, but it didn't choke on it like my big vacuum did and kept on going.
- The electronic barriers work well, but there is a learning curve on how to place them properly (The signal is cone-shaped). These need 2 "C" batteries each (4 total, not included).
- It is not difficult to maintain: emptying the dust collection, removing brushes and using brush cleaner, wiping off sensors, moving it to a new room.

The cons:
- need to watch Roomba do a room before you turn it loose unobserved; you simply don't know what works and what doesn't until you try it.
- There is no owner's manual - you have to watch the DVD or go online to learn to use it.
- Roomba got stuck its first time near the stairs (it had too much momentum and shot over the top) but does fine once it slowed down and approached it a second time.
- Roomba gets stuck everytime on cables and cords; have to move these up or tape them down
- Roomba gets stuck on bathmats (but so does my big vac)
- Roomba consistently gets stuck under an end table whose legs are too close for passage - it seems obsessed with this table and goes back even after rescue. A pillow, book, or cardboard in front of the table solves this.
- Roomba's HEPA filters clog up really fast due to their location in the dirt collection cavity. Need 2 new filters every week with the amount of dust swept up.

Overall, I love this little guy. He's fun to watch and and does a much better job than I do sweeping by hand. But he does require hands-on cleaning maintenance everytime you use Roomba. Performance goes down dramatically if you don't prepare the room, clearing obstacles like cords, set-up electronic and physical barriers, and do the required maintenance when he's done. Highly recommended.

I'm likin' this model!

I saved up and bought this Roomba for my enclosed patio when both of my Dirt Dogs passed away and IRobot stopped making them....sigh....I really miss being able to use the Dirt Dog to sweep outside and in the garage. The IRobot people said this unit would work just fine in those areas, but I'm not going to put something I spent this much money on to clean up dropped screws and leaves!

That said, I like this Roomba very much in our enclosed patio. I LOVE the two HEPA filters, which are easily blown out with a can of air or compressor after a vacuuming sesson. They're picking up a lot of dust that my regular vacuum misses....Ok, that I miss when I'm using the regular vacuum, which also has a HEPA filter. They pick up feathers and seeds from the birds, and lots of hair from the cats and dog. Mission accomplished.

It does a nice job of moving from hard surfaces (concrete, in this case) to rugs, and cleaning them all well. Technology is really improved in this unit. For one thing, it gently bounces off things, rather than whacking into them. I'll be a lot more comfortable using it in the house around my antique furniture. It docks itself when it's getting low on battery power, or you can push a button to have it dock manually. It can be programmed to run on specific days at specific times (very cool). It will also spot-clean a small area at the push of a button. That comes in really handy when a plant gets knocked over.

With a lower profile, this unit doesn't get stuck under furniture as much as the Dirt Dog. It also seems "smarter". The other day it went under the center cutout in a cedar chest and I watched it maneuver. The Dirt Dog would have just banged its head until its battery ran out. This one continued to work on the problem until it found its way to the high spot and back out into the room again.

The edge-cleaner capability isn't great. I find I have to go back with a DustBuster and clean edges. Small area rugs at doorways or up against the walls get cleaned much better if I move them to the center of the room.

But those are fair tradeoff for not having to drag out the vacuum and spend the time to clean the patio myself!

Neat Freaks Be Warned: This is Only Part of What You're After

I've been spoiled when it comes to vacuums: I have had the privilege of having a Lindhaus, which is a $1,000 German manufactured vacuum cleaner that I finally had to give up because it's so rarified that you can't get it repaired in some major cities. The Roomba is great, but if you're looking for suction, you'll be really frustrated.

What's Good:

Like virtually every kind of floor-cleaning robot, this will pick up dander, dirt, pet hair, and small objects that you had no idea were there.

- It's good if you're trying to cut down on allergens and dirt, generally.

- Also, the dreaded "unsealed, and-it-will-burn-out-in-six-months-unless-you-are-some-kind-of-engineer-and-can-take-it-apart-to-fix-it-part", is fixed.

The gearbox on this one is sealed. You no longer need a screwdriver and reostat to do maintenance.

-The computer location sensing technology on this is amazing. This can find its way around delicate dining room chairs, even when it's knocking them around a bit to get around them. It's like it can tell that it moved the object in front of it, and then adjusts accordingly.

-This picks up the kind of gritty dirt that the Mint floorwasher misses. You can run the Mint and then run the Roomba, and the floor is pretty clean.

-The battery charges fast and lasts a long time.

-If you're the sort of person who likes to take things apart without reading the instruction manual, this is pretty intuitive and there isn't much you can break.

-You can run this and another floorcleaner like the Mint floorwashing robot at the same time--they scoot into each other and move off, with no damage.

What's Bad:

-I have two short haired dogs with a longer, softer undercoat. The rotating brush on the side gets wound up, even in their shorter hair, every five minutes.

-The unit is pretty loud. It's squeaky, rattley and makes a lot of noise.

-This skids across silk carpet. It will take part of the carpet with it.

-There is no suction: this is just a sweeper.

-If you're serious about cleaning, you will need to clean the brush heads every fifteen minutes or so. There is no "set it and forget it" if you're serious about getting up dog hair.

-The instruction manual is a DVD. Speaking as a girl who likes instruction manuals, I hate that part about it. It's particularly irritating if you're looking for troubleshooting information.

-It treats my larger dog like furniture. It runs into him, and he looks vaguely offended, and then it moves away. (The fact that my twelve-year-old corgi kind of is furniture being sort of beside the point.)

-My smaller corgi mix is frightened by this. It's too loud for smaller, more nervous dogs.

-This won't get up anything that is stuck to tile floor. For that, you're going to need a floorwashing robot, like the Mint, or possibly just some good-old fashioned paper towels and water.

Edit: You may have to change your paradigm when it comes to thinking about what is good vacuuming. It really bugged me that this didn't pick up all the dog hair on the first or even the second pass over my throw rugs. However, it's not you standing there trying to get up the dog hair. If you can let the Roomba run for quite a while, or enclose it in a smaller space with actual or Roomba walls, this does as good a job as vacuums with a lot more suction. It may not clean while you're watching, but it will do it eventually--it just takes a lot longer than what you may be used to.

Still Happy and Content

We've had our Roomba since January 2010 and approx. 6 months later, I still love it and am really glad we made the purchase. It took a little convincing for me to get my husband to agree with the purchase, but now he calls it "his vacuum", and likes to show it off to our friends and family when they come over. For us, it really has reduced my weekly in-house workload. With two cats in the house, birds, bunny, and a dog, pet hair gets tracked throughout the house. With two young children, our kitchen (hardwood floors) gets nibblets of food all over the floor. Setting the vacuum up to focus on one room (by using the virtual walls) makes a big difference. Frequently ours is venturing throughout the entire house.

The only problem we occasionally have is when it gets stuck under our china cabinet, or stuck while trying to suck up a toy that was left behind, or shoelaces hanging off a shoe left out. All very minor issues. I will say, it's a bit odd, when in the middle of the night (like last night), I get woken up by it coming into our bedroom. My guess is it gets turned on by the cats while they're running around playing at night. I hope that's all it is. ;)

I will say that I do still run my other vacuum cleaner (an old Rainbow) about once a month. We have a particular rug in our living room that the pet hair gets ground in after a while and it's hard to get it up with the Roomba, but in general, the carpets look like we regularly vacuum, and you can see all it picks up when you clean it out. Note that you do have to clean it out regularly, and by that I mean, every time it's done with a cleaning. This might seem a pain to some, but it really only takes about 5 minutes to do it. It's worth it to me if it means I can program it to come on whenever I want and come home to cleaned carpets. On another positive note, it has made my kids and husband do a lot better with tidying up better.

Note that bins are interchangeable, not used concurrently

I've had quite a few Roomba cleaning robots, and was interested in the 562 because it's advertised as being new and different for homes with pets. Experienced "Roomba" users should note (as I failed to) that the new bin advertised for the pet model is simply a different bin that's used place of the normal one (as opposed to a secondary bin that's used concurrently, as I'd incorrectly assumed). The sweeper bin can be used in place of the normal bin, and seems to disables the vacuum functionality, making the Roomba a sweeping robot.

The Achilles Heel of this robot (as with all Roomba floor-cleaning robots) is the constant need to clean the machine's brushes. We're not talking once every few days here--we're talking 1-2 times per cleaning cycle. You don't set the Roomba to clean while you're at work and expect it to be done when you get home. You learn to expect to find it in the middle of the floor, requiring a brush cleaning before it can continue. And ultimately--after a year or two--you expect it to require factory repair or replacement.

Note that I give this model 4 stars despite what seems like a fairly middling review. That's because it works pretty well, but is hardly maintenance free. Note that we have two Labrador Retrievers. I'd expect that people without pets would have an easier time with the Roomba, and that people with longer-haired pets would fine it even more challenging to keep the brushes clean.

Doggie Roomba

Our Roomba is really part of the family. We call him Paco (don't know why, it just seems to fit). We have four (4) dogs, two long hair and two short hair. Without Paco, it is impossible to keep up with the hair and dirt they bring in. By running Paco every other day, we manage to keep the hair to a minimum, even under the beds where cleaning is nearly impossible. Cleaning Paco up is easy if you have the right tools. My problems with the Roomba (my third one) is that it is impossible to get a person on the phone or on line. Emails to iRobot are generally answered within 30-45 days which is also a problem. They send extra brushes, sweeps, etc., with the robot which helps but I keep an old comb, a small screwdriver, a hemostat, and an old toothbrush to clean Paco. I'm hoping that this one lasts longer than the other two.

New Roomba vs. Old

If you are new to Roomba, you will wonder if it is worthwhile. The answer is clearly YES, since anything it cleans is that much less for you to clean. However, which is better, the old (and cheaper) Roomba, or the new models like the 530?

First, the 530 comes with the charging/base station, and this is very useful. I have placed this in the entranceway which leads into the livingroom, the kitchen or the bedroom. Using the virtual walls (included), I block off rooms so that it can only do the entranceway + 1 other room. I simply press the "Clean" button, and it backs itself off the charging stand and then spends the next 2 hours cleaning, finally returning to the charging stand. Nice!

Should you upgrade from an older model Roomba (I now use my old Roomba upstairs)? It depends on your situation. By-the-way, the old virtual walls do NOT work with the new Roomba.

Roomba DIED! Nine beeps. Can't say I am happy. I called iRobot and they say the issue is due to a defective bumper which is NOT fixable. Since my warranty is expired, they offered me a somewhat discount price on a new Roomba. I am not sure what I will do.

It's Like a Beloved Pet Who MAKES EVERYTHING BETTER

Awesome. This new generation fixes all the problems of the previous. Much smarter, much bigger dust bin, much better in every way. Great that it self-docks when tired. Maintanence is a snap...really could not be easier/faster. There are some negatives - how could there not be? - but this thing has such a contagious personality that it starts feeling like your pet, and you're inclined to forgive, and even find the faults charming.

You have to prep the room (cords up and out of the way, no papers or clutter on the floor, move small items out of the room and learn which objects present problems and get them out of the way). Performance varies on throw rugs (it's great on rug/carpet surfaces themselves, but Roomba can get caught up as it travels over edges of throw rugs that don't have much weight or cling). It's good at slowing down and banging objects gently, but less so on narrow vertical objects (e.g. piano legs), which it really clunks (not enough to damage, but it will make you wince). In terms of results, it's a notch below a stout top-end British maid with her sturdy Hoover, but several notches above what mere mortals can achieve, and it's especially good on edgework, under baseboards and furniture, and other spots most people would miss.Yes, it gets corners fine, in spite of its round shape. It's got a whirling brush that ably gets at them.

Most of all, if you're someone who's non-meticulous about keeping up housekeeping cycles (even if not, like, a total slob), it's hard to describe the satisfaction of ALWAYS having spotless floors. Since, per above, you'll develop at least some degree of affection for your Roomba, it's the ideal pet...it vastly contributes to the household, yet its needs are few (I pull hairs out of its brushes with the affection of a dog owner checking his dalmation for tics).

I have a fairly large house, and one unit is more than enough. Every other day, I bring her upstairs to work, that's all.

Oh, and it's extraordinarily entertaining to watch. The drama of whether it'll ever get to this hairball or that crumb is downright fraught. In spite of its seemingly random pattern, it does somehow get everything in the end.

One nice side effect: the act of prepping a room for vacuuming - i.e. getting clutter off the floor - is itself a life-changing improvement. I find it much easier to organize books, papers, etc, when it's for an immediate purpose than as a general habit. So the house isn't just cleaner, floor-wise....it's also generally better kept-up. Love my Roomba. Buy one now.

A Great Product Made Even Better

With two dogs in the house we could not live without our Roomba. The 530 is a vast improvement from earlier models. It seems to pick up more dirt, the battery life is longer, the fast-charge is about 33% more rapid than its Discovery predecessors and it is generally more quiet.

The new sensors that prevent the robot from "speed-bumping" into furniture are a very nice touch, but beware if the robot is in a tight area, it may appear sluggish -- the sensors are working to continually slow it down. It's a feature I like, but need to get used to.

My only concern with this robot is the high cost of parts. The bot itself is cheaper than earlier models but the components most prone to breakage or wear-out are twice the cost so the lifetime operation costs may be higher. Replacement batteries are nearly $100. Earlier models were $50.

ONE MONTH LATER ....

This is a slight amend to my review above. Having used it for a month a couple points of note:

1) All of the new 5-Series Roombas lack the "Max Mode" that was common on earlier models. I miss this. I can no longer let it go util the battery runs out. It goes until it "thinks" it's finshed. Well, sometimes we disagree. And I'm usually right. It simply doesn't cover as much ground as I need it too in the standard clean mode. I'd have to mark it down a full star for this -- I can't count on it to do the whole house when I'm at work anymore.

2) The folks I know who have these encountered problems with the side cleaning bushes breaking off. After a month's use, I lost all but one. I'm sure this is high on their list of fixes.

LOVE MY ROOMBA!!!

I cannot say enough good things about my ROOMBA. I had an older one that crapped out so I had to replace it, not real happy about that, but this thing is AMAZING. I have it set to go off every day due to the two dogs that we have. It does an amazing job picking up the hair and debris on the floor as well as the carpet. I highly recommend this product.

Does a good job in a challenging situation

We have two large long-haired dogs (and I mean long - one has 13+ inch body hair!), and this iRobot does a good job picking up after them. For some reason they are both shedding right now (middle of winter, go figure). Most days the iRobot does stop and ask to be cleaned while cleaning the family room and dining rom, but it's usually nearly done before it asks. I've been running it every other day. Having it run automatically doesn't really work for us because I have to pick all the soft dog toys up before it runs since some do interfere with it, and I need to monitor it around the dogs. But it is amazingly good at handling chair legs, chew toys, and cords. It did grab one of the dog's tails once but released it immediately, so I am teaching them to move out of its way.

At first I was concerned about needing to clean it every day, but the tools they provide are excellent, and with a bit of practice, I've gotten very very quick at cleaning it. And cleaning it is way more fun than vacuuming, so I'd rather spend a few minutes cleaning it than vacuuming and then use the time it's vacuuming to play with and brush the dogs.

I do think that the reason it is asking to be cleaned so much is that it does a much better job of picking up the hair than our traditional vacuum cleaner, and it may be working on removing hair that has been embedded in the carpet for a long time. The carpet really does look great after it runs.

The virtual walls are awesome, and I use them to focus on our main living space. Our downstairs has virtually NO doors between rooms, so being able to block doorways with the virtual walls is really nice. Without them, I would have had to set up blocks in several doorways every time it runs.

Cool solution to pet hair problems and no time to vacuum

My yellow lab seems to shed enough hair to make her a hairless dog - but it never happens. Constant shedding = constant vacuuming!! I hesitated to get a Roomba because of reported problems with ease of cleaning the actual unit - etc. I decided to go for it anyway. Couldn't be happier! The Roomba 564 easily pops apart to clean areas where pet hair can build up around the wheel and on the brush. I love this little guy. I usually run it when I'm home to be sure it covers the areas I need covered. Not labor intense at all - I'm really liking this thing! I'm going to name it soon! haha

Great but not perfect ***Downgraded Star Rating***

My wife and I decided to get one of these because our 8 month old son is about to start crawling. While we try and keep our floors clean, our beagle has other thoughts as she sheds all over the place. We went with the latest 560 model as it has just about everything we would want with a product like this. It works as advertised and we will definitley keep it but there are some areas that need improvement. Here is a quick breakdown of the pros and cons

Pros

1. Quieter than a standard vaccuum

2. Seems to learn the room dimensions quickly. The virtual walls and lighthouse feature are very nice.
3. Is "smart" enough to avoid getting tangled in our area rugs

4. Obviously easy to use as it is just a push of a button (or even better when you program it)

5. Can use everyday to keep the floors spotless

6. Have successfully used it on hard wood, vinyl, carpet and (accidently) concrete

7. Cleans under furniture which is otherwise a pain to do

8. Entertainment value - keeps the dog and baby interested for a while!

Cons (or areas for improvement)

1. Fills up fast - Upon intital cleaning cycles, we had to empty it after about 10 minutes. Further usage proved better as the dust/dog hair was a lot less than before. I suppose this is a good thing as it is picking up dirt that I missed with the regualr vaccum.

2. No warning that it is full. This is the one area that would be a huge improvement. I feel like I need to interrupt it all the time to check if it is full. It would be great if it had some way to gauge how full it is.

3. Battery life - Not sure if I am getting the full specified battery life out of this as it seems to need a recharge after about an hour to an hour and a half (isn't it supposed to last longer?)

4. Automatic docking is iffy. Several times after it was done cleaning, it wandered around aimlessly looking for the docking station. The "lighthouse" feature didn't seem to help much. I ended up moving the dock to a more open area and hopefully that will work better.

So for my first few days playing with this thing, it seems to do its job rather well with just a few annoyances that really do not affect its ability to clean. We plan on running it once a day to keep the dog hair and dust down to a minimum which will hopefully help our allegies.

*****UPDATE: 10/2/2007*******

Well, I've been using the Roomba now for a couple of weeks. I have it run every other day and here is what I think of it now

1. After letting it clean several times, I find I don't have to empty it every 10 minutes. I can now clean three rooms (about 900 square feet) without having to empty it.

2. My wife and I both agree that we seem to breathe better in the house now. Maybe it is due to less dust in the house (especially under the couches) or maybe its in our heads. Either way, we are breathing easier.

3. The self docking is now working great. I think my problems in the past were due to the brushes getting too dirty and requiring frequent cleaning (2 or 3 per run). Now, since the floors are cleaner, this has not been a problem and the Roomba finds its way home with no issues. I use the lighthouse settings to clean each room separately and then I guess they help Roomba find its home. Very nice!

4. Battery life doesn't seem to be a problem. I am getting the stated cleaning times per the manual and it seems to be enough to clean the 3 rooms.

5. The Roomba does require maintenance after each cleaning cycle. This requires emptying the dust bin, removing the brushes and filter to clean and, sometimes, cleaing the sensors that may have dust buildup. The entire process takes no more than 2 minutes and, even though it sounds like a pain, will hopefully keep Roomba problem free for a long time.

I can find no fault with the Roomba right now. I might even consider purchasing a second and third one for the other parts of the house. I suppose I can move Roomba to the back rooms on the first floor or the upstairs but that would require too much effort on my part!

I am also considering the Scooba for my kitchen and bathrooms but haven't pulled the trigger yet. I might wait for the next generation to see if the bugs have been worked out of the current models. Also, if Irobot ever invented one, I would jump at the chance to get a robot that will shampoo carpets! Maybe we will see one soon..

***Update 11/19/2007***

Ran into my first problem with Roomba this past week. The side brush snapped off and I was unable to put it back on. Knowing that these brushes need to be replaced from time to time I decided to order some replacements. Finding them on the Roomba site and ordering them was easy. Problem is that I was informed that they are on backorder for 4 to 6 weeks!! I e-mailed support and they responsed asking me for my mailing address, Roomba number and where I purchased it from. They stated they needed this so they could send me a replacement brush (a free replacement brush). I sent them the information with the hopes that they have some spare brushes ready to ship out but was then informed that it will take 4 to 6 weeks to get it out to me.

So in the end, I am stuck waiting for about $75 worth of brushes that I ordered as well as the free side brush they are sending me for at least 4 weeks. The good news is that Roomba still does her thing but the corners and edges of walls are somewhat neglected without the side brush.

I would still recommend Roomba to those who are thinking about it. Just be forwarned that "due to extremely high demand" replacement parts, including brushes, are currently on backorder for the 500 series.

******Final Update 1/25/2008*******

Thought I'd give one final update now that I have been using Roomba for several months. I am still a believer that Roomba can keep your floors clean but it does take a bit more effort than some people will think. I will try my best to break down the cons for Roomba as the pros are pretty straight forward. You get very clean floors without having to pick up a vaccum. My floors have never looked or felt cleaner and this goes for both the hard wood floors and the area rugs.

Now for the cons (none of which would make me rethink my purchase but I thought it would be informative to those who are still waiting on buying one)

1. Although Roomba does her thing once I hit the clean button, there is still some maintenance that is required. Emptying the dirt bin after each cleaning cycle and keeping the brushes clean have actually been a bit more work that originally described. I have a dog who sheds and the hair gets wrapped around some of the brushes. The tool that is provided in the box to clean the brushes does little to help with this. I find it eaiser to get a pair of scissors and carefully cut the wrapped dog hair off the brushes. For those of you who don't want to get your hands dirty, please keep this in mind!

2. The side brushes break fairly easy. One of the comments I saw in my review is that Irobot now ships some rubber bumpber that helps with this. I haven't looked into getting this yet but I suggest that if you don't have one on yours (like me), be prepared to replace the side brush often. I was able to get a free replacement on my first one but haven't gone back for a second yet.

3. The scheduling aspect of Roomba is useless for me. Because I have a 1 year old who has every toy in the history of toys, I find I need to do a complete sweep of the rooms before Roomba does her thing. If Roomba hits one of these toys, the sensor doesn't always pick up on it and it will try and go over the toy. This usually results in Roomba shutting down until you restart it. Leaving it on schedule means I need to clean up before it goes off. Its just easier for me to set it off manually when I want it to clean.

4. Noise - While quiter than a vaccum, Roomba can still be rather loud. Unless your house is very large, expect the noise to create a bothersome sound if you are watching TV on the same floor or if you are trying to sleep. You will hear it.

5. Auto Docking - Can't seem to figure this one out. Half the time Roomba docks itself with no problem. The other half it wanders around aimlessly with the docking light blinking just a few feet from the station yet it completely ignores it. I've cleaned the sensors and it still does it. I guess it just has a mind of its own sometimes.

6. One minor cleaning issue - Roomba will sometimes leave a big dust ball on the edge of an area rug when it is transitioning from a hard wood floor to the rug. It appears that the dust ball is wrapped around the brushes at one point but gets pulled off by the edge of the rug when it takes that tiny little step up from the floor. If Roomba goes back over that area, great! dust ball gone. If not, your stuck with a dust ball that you have to pick up (again, for me not a big deal but for those that don't want to get their hands dirty....)

None of these complaints or even the sum of them all give me enough reason to question my purchase. Since 95% of the dirt is removed including under furniture (which frankly, I never cleaned prior to Roomba!) these minor issues really don't amount to much in my opinion. Yes, it can be rather disgusting to clean the brushes when they get clogged and I need to make sure all toys are off the floor but that all translates into a very clean house! Keeps the wife happy!!

I'll check comments from time to time so if anyone has any additional questions, just drop them in and I will try and help.

********One More Update - May 20, 2008**************

Had to post this as it has been somewhat of a minor/major issue with my Roomba. The side brush that spins around has not been the best design I've ever seen. I've mentioned that it has broken off before and Irobot sent me some free replacements. Well, this continues to be a problem.

It seems that the side brush likes to get caught on things like corners or furniture which then causes it to break off or snap off an arm. I contacted Irobot about it again asking if they could send me some of those rubber bumbers one person mentioned in the comments section. The response was that they found the rubber bumber to have little to no impact on the side brush so they are no longer using them.

They did send me 3 additional brushes at no charge (thank you very much) but this won't fix the design problem of the brush itself. So I caution people here that are looking to purchase this robot that do not want to fork over additional money for new brushes every coupole of months. I'm Ok with it because I just consider the brushes to be the cost of vacuum bags (and the free ones don't hurt either!) but in this economy, some people might not have the money to pick these up when they need replacing.

I sitll love my Roomba because of the great job it does and the fact it covers areas I could never reach. In fact, I now have a Scooba to wash my floors and love the job that does as well (although that has an entire other set of issues!!)

Oh boy! Changed my rating down to 3 stars. For the last few months, I noticed that Roomba was not picking up as much stuff as before. I changed brushes. cleaned it, took it apart and cleaned it but it still wasn't picking up anything. All I was getting was balls of dust being left behind.

Went online to find some ideas and followed a few tricks and found that my brushes were not moving. Upon trying everything under the sun to get this working, the end result is the the cleaning head module (CHD) has died. Great news, however, is that Irobot sells these for $49.99!!! Yay, I get to spend even more money to keep Roomba running. I am beginning to believe that the 560 model I bought was the beta version since the side brush and now the entire CHD have been redesigned. Yes, you heard that right, the CHD I decided to order is a redesign that apparently fixes the issues that the original one had.

Since I am in this for so much money already, what's another $49.99? The original cost was about $380 plus another $100 or so on replacement brushes plus this $50 brings my total to the cost of a high end Dyson vaccuum. Well, at least it does a great job when it is running.

While I love Roomba when it is working, I am finding the the cost and effort required to keep it running (the constant cleaning and taking it apart)might be too much for most people. I've read all the forums out there and the problems I have had are very common. And since Irobot keeps redesigning this piece by piece, I assume they are aware of all the issues as well. Hopefully, by the time I am done putting all the new pieces together, I will have a Roomba that will last for a long time before breaking down.

I understand that technology requires maintenance and repair but 2 years should not be considered the life cycle of a vaccuum. I guess gadgets of today are not made as well as they were "back in the day" as my parents woudl say. I will update once I get my new CHD and let everyone know how it works.

****Another Update 11/23/2009******

I got my new cleaning head module and it looks like Irobot has fixed the issues where dirt and paet hair could get stuck in the motor. Only time will tell if this will last but it is doing a great job for me again.

HOWEVER....my battery would not hold a charge for longer than 30 minutes and all attempts to "fix" it per the forums and tech support failed. The end result was a new battery purchase..yes, more money spent. rather than buy directly from Irobot, I decided to pick up a generic one sold here on amazon. I believe I paid about $65 for a generic battery that is equal to the $99 battery on the Irobot store. It is supposed to last longer than the stock battery but I haven't noticed much of a difference in the 2 Roomba runs since I got it.

So my Roomba is happily working again, just in time for the holidays, and I am hoping that I am done replacing faulty designed parts. I must be right???

******Maybe my Final Update?? 1/7/2011*******

Its been a while since my last update to this review. I guess that is because I haven't had any issues since I replaced the cleaning head module and battery in late 2009. The newer white side brushes seem to stay in place, the newer style brushes don't get as clogged as the old ones and my battery (an aftermarket brand) gives me a good hour and forty five minutes (or more) before it needs a charge.

I now have a 1 year old boy to go along with my 4 year boy so my house is in pretty rough shape after the two of them are done destroying it. So I am routinely running Roomba around those play areas so I can avoid bringing out the big vacuum. It has worked well...knock on wood!

I think I have nothing more to say! (unless of course something else breaks!)

With the holidays approaching fast, I figured I'd drop in and give a quick update. It's been almost a year since my last update and I am proud to say the Roomba has not given me any issues since the new cleaning module was installed back in 2009. I have swapped out various brushes from time to time but that is part of the regular maintenance that everyone has to do (part of the ongoing cost to keep Roomba happy).

I don't get to run Roomba as often as I would like as my almost 2 year old is petrified whenever Roomba turns on. I basically have to wait until my wife takes him out for a bit so I can let Roomba clean. My almsot 5 year old could care less when Roomba is running but does complian about the noise if he is trying to watcgh TV. It makes it a bit harder as the cleaning cycles are farther apart from one another so human intervention is needed to clean out the dust bin at least once during the cycle.

Hopefully my writing this update doesn't jinx me in some way and Roomba will decide to quit on me this week! Overall, I'm still very happy that I have this machine to help with the never ending cleaning of my house (amazing how much 2 boys can ruin in such a short amount of time!!)

A Worthy Successor to the Roomba Line

We have two Roombas plus a Scooba in our house. When one of the batteries on one of our Roombas finally reached the end of its life cycle, we decided to donate that Roomba to a friend and to get ourselves the new top of the line - the Roomba 560. We got this right when it first came out, but we waited several months before posting a review. It's pretty much impossible to review one of these Roombas after only a few days! It takes weeks if not months to start to see how well they last over time, and what breaks down. Believe me - been there, done that.

So now it's many months later, and I have to say, we are quite pleased with the improvements of this Roomba over the previous generations of Roombas. So first, for those who don't even have ANY Roomba yet (hard to believe!). Roombas are awesome. We have cats, and we work from home so we're home all day. It is AMAZING how much dirt and dust and junk collects in the carpet every single day. Who really has time to vacuum their carpets twice a day any more? With the Roomba, you set the scheduler to do it while you are asleep. You wake up in the morning, the carpets are clean, the air is fresh, and you empty out the dust bin. It is just wonderful.

Even those without pets might be amazed how much lint and such the Roomba will find every morning for you.

I have a noise meter and have done several tests with the noise meter. The Roomba is much quieter than other regular vacuums. It is NOT silent - it can't be! How could it vacuum up dirt and be silent? But it is quieter than the alternatives, and heck, you're sleeping anyway. I can easily sleep through a Roomba running.

Now, on to the improvements of this new Roomba over previous models. First, it has a cool feature where the speed drops when it senses it is approaching a solid object. The old Roomba would just run full tilt into an object - wall, couch etc. - and then turn around. This one slows down so that it hits the object gently. Sure the old Roomba wouldn't dent the walls with its powerful force, but still, it's nice to have it be gentle on furniture and your building.

Next, for better or for worse, the new Roomba is much more aware of when its bin and brushes are getting grungy. I admit I didn't clean my other Roombas as often as I should have. And it led to problems. This new Roomba will actually stop and warn you when it's getting full and when the brushes should be cleaned. If you're a procrastinator like I am, this is a good thing. If you're a clean freak that empties the bin every time, and cleans the brushes every time, then you probably won't even notice this feature.

The anti tangle technology is nice. The previous Roomba would start to eat a cord and just keep going until it was really stuck. This Roomba at least tries to get itself untangled. Still, I don't recommend leaving cords and strings and things lying around. You're just asking for trouble if you do.

The new system uses a "lighthouse" instead of just a wall. With a lighthouse, you mark out a room so the Roomba finishes with that room completely before going on to the next room. They are like section markers. We tend to just use walls, but if you have two large rooms the lighthouse feature might be really helpful for you.

After several months of running we have had NO problems at all with our Roomba. No broken brushes, no falling off pieces, nothing. It is still going strong and we are very pleased with it.

Highly, highly recommended! I am happy to give personal advice and I even have videos of Roombas on my website. I love Roombas, they have saved me countless hours of work, and they make my home a much cleaner and easier-breathing place to be.

Beware of the "new" Roomba 560 now only for single room (updated review)

My review in late 2007 describing the red side brush "amputee" problem and poor customer support is still the highest rated critical response on Amazon. Because of that experience, the recounting of which is in the original review appended below after this update, I had not bought an iRobot product in over four years. Now I have bought two "new" 560s, which arrived today (more about "new" below). This update is primarily for (i) previous owners of a 560 that are contemplating buying a "new" 560 or (ii) those that have information on the original 560 and mistakenly believe that this is what they will get if they order a "new" 560.

If it were not for the problems discussed in this update, I would raise my rating to 3.5 stars. Once again, I think iRobot may be shooting itself in the foot. And what upsets me is that I really want to see this company succeed.

By way of disclosure I have owned several of every generation of Roomba. I presently own seven 560's (five old and two "new") and two Discoverys (400 series that still work). In the original review, I promised to update it (see the original review at end), so here goes :

PROs:

1. After all the stone-walling back in 2007, iRobot finally fixed the problems of the side brushes by replacing them with a yellow three-armed brush rather than the previous six-armed brush that quickly became a no-armed brush. (If you have a red six-arm side brush -- probably no-arm by now, call iRobot for a free replacement).

2. Today Tech Support is MUCH BETTER. Before, some idiot CIO had apparently decided to move everything to an e-mail system, which was MISERABLE. Now you get a human being that speaks English and is courteous and helpful (at least that was my experience with Dan H. today).

3. The virtual walls are slimmer than the two previous generations.

CONs:

1. The "new" 560 is a stripped down version of what iRobot has been selling in the original 560.

2. The "new" 560 is designed to clean a SINGLE ROOM rather than the previous THREE-ROOM system that worked with two lighthouses.

3. iRobot ripped out RF communication of the original 560 without disclosure.

4. The "new" 560 package comes with NO LIGHT HOUSES. iRobot replaced the two light houses with two virtual walls (reminiscent of the previous 400 and 200 series, complete with an on-off switch).

5 The "new" 560s are NOT compatible with the existing lighthouses of the original 560s.

6 The IR remote previously included with the 560 is not included in the "new" 560.

7. Most egregiously. iRobot did not even assign a modified model number to the "new" 560, which, in all probability, may be a deceptive trade practice since the new product is inferior to the original one and there is no disclouse of the strip-down of the original product.

8 The "new" virtual walls do not shut off automatically, but instead have an on-off button (which is useless if you are using the scheduling feature, which I hope is still there). I was told that despite leaving the "new" virtual towers on continually (they no longer turn themselves of because of the removal of RF), they "should" last six months on one set of batteries. Let's pray. Both sets of virtual walls (Gen 1 and Gen 2) sucked power like no one's business.

9. The "new" 560 still lack a soft bumper for furniture.

10. The 560 still has a problem climbing above 1/2". We have a fireplace with a front marble front-piece, which each 560 tries to climb. It is between .5" and .75". The result" The Roomba gets "stuck. There is no realistic solution other than iRobot fixing the problem so that if a 560 cannot successfully "mount" the obstacle that it backs off. I know its robots in Afghanistan did better than this.

10. Finally, be aware of iRobot's habit of discontinuing models, particularly those that will work with the existing lighthouses:

a. The "new" 560 no longer works with them
b. The 610 looks like it's gone
c. The 572 looks like it's gone

Only the new 780 ($$$) seems to support the existing lighthouses.

SUMMARY:

In summary, if you are an old enthusiast of Roombas or a previous owner of a 560 using the lighthouse function, this "new" 560 looks like a stripped-down version designed to lower manufacturing costs without adequate disclosure. If you are a newbie, buy one of these if you plan to stick one in EACH ROOM you wish to clean (or haul it in to other rooms -- which defeats the scheduling function). iRobot needs to lower its MSRP accordingly for lowering the quality of this "new" product.

PRIOR REVIEW.

I have been a long time customer of iRobot. I have had multiple early generation Roombas (and still have four fourth generation Roombas in my house). I bought two 560's in September and the side brushes became "amputees" within the first few weeks, with the brushes breaking off.

When I called for Technical Support (not listed on their website: 877.855.8593) I was told it was a "known problem", and they would ship out the new redesigned side brush replacements as soon as received. Weeks later, still no date and even today "maybe three weeks".

Now they are hedging on whether it was a design defect. What IS clear is that none of the units on sale have a "redesigned" part, so you may have the same problem I have had. So forget about getting one before Christmas unless you want to go through this same debacle I am.

I have always had the highest respect for iRobot (despite the Scooba), but my faith has been shaken by this product.

BTW, I still have received no replacement side brushes after almost two months.

There is another problem with some of the 560's (and I assume all of the early 500 series). The original two 560's I bought in September did not have a "bumper extension" included.

So if you are buying from a retailer MAKE SURE THAT THE ONE YOU BUY HAS A BUMPER EXTENSION INCLUDED. I saw a 560 at a store this weekend with this new piece, which is just a piece of rubber that you stick on the lower part of the bumper and a "slip sheet" to the manual that tells how to place it, but does not say what it is for.

When I called iRobot and told them that I did not receive these with my original 560's, they first claimed "all of them" shipped with it, but they would order me two -- Guess what else is now back-ordered?

I suggested that the bumper extension might be a new "fix" for the side-brush problem, but the customer service representative said it was to keep the "IR sensors from being scratched" by furniture. To defend that this had nothing to do with the side-brush problem, he said that they had had side brushes "falling off without contact with anything" and that definitely the side brushes had been redesigned but no one in technical support was told how.

Here is what I think the new bumper is for:

We have five fireplaces in our house. All but one have a hearth extension height of 1/2" or less above the floor. The fifth one has 7/8" above the floor, where I have seen the 560's stalled, with the 560 eventually disentangling itself (but with brushes soon thereafter falling off!).

I think the main purpose of the bumper extension is to sense a transition in this critical area (7/8") and be repelled by contact with the bumper extension. IRobot says that this is not its purpose. However, the instruction slip sheet specifically states to place part the extension below the existing vertical height of the bumper.

I will try to update this if and when I get:

1. My replacement side brushes and
2. My missing bumper extensions.

A few more observations ....

Customer service.

Hold times seem to be going up dramatically. I was on hold for 17 minutes and then disconnected. I then called sales (which answers immediately) and was eventually reconnected to customer service.

Docking station/lighthouses.

It appears that the lighthouses with the 500-series are coded to work only with the docking station or Roomba with which they were shipped. Having two of these systems, I tried the two lighthouses associated with the other one -- no recognition. This may actually be an advantage if you have a house with more than one. I just have not seen any documentation on this issue.

As I have said before, I think the Roomba in general is a great product. I just thing they rushed to market with the 500-series before it was ready for prime-time.
